Holiday Plans? [NOT 31/01/24]

Hi, friends!

It’s one of the Easters today, congrats if you’re celebrating. I say one of the Easters because I didn’t learn until age 39 that Greek Orthodox Easter is observed on a different day, and honestly I’m too lazy to google if other Orthodox denominations also celebrate Easter on a different day but odds seem good they do.

Easter has not been a holiday my family has done anything with since I was in high school. We ran out of young kids in the family who would enjoy Easter egg hunts and Easter baskets full of sugar. Myself and the older cousins were uninclined to have children ourselves, so eh, no more kids to enjoy the nonreligious parts of Easter.

Where this leaves me is nothing to do on Easter. Normally I end up just doing yard work. Can’t go to Costco or my grocery store, they’re closed. If weather is nice I could go to a park or something.

What do you do on holidays you don’t observe? Make bundt cakes for fun? Try out different ways to cook bacon to see if your friends here can feel a disturbance in the force? Binge episodes of Hawaii 5-0?

  1. Half the fam had to work today, so I have my Grandbaby here. My mom and stepdad came by and brought a small Easter basket for the little one, and cupcakes for the rest of us. I threw a ham in the crockpot (my kid bought a TWELVE POUND ham… We’re gonna be eating ham for weeks!) and we made sandwiches. That’s about it.

In other news… I have 2 new kittens!!! Other-Husband got them for me for my birthday! He totally surprised me. We’ve been looking for a new kitty or 2, but hadn’t found one yet. They are so freakin’ cute! They’re brothers, about 10 weeks old… one is grey with a white chin, chest, and paws, the other is black with the exact same markings. I named them Frankie and Johnnie 🙂 There will be a zillion pictures over at backtalk… I would put some here, but I have enough trouble posting text 🙄

    Anyway… Happy Easter, everyone!

  2. holidays i dont observe?

oh fuck no…a days offs a day off

    gib! gib all of them!

in todays case tho…..what i didnt do is mow the lawn

seems the forever rain we had kinda sorta killed my mower….

im not too sad tho…..didnt really want to mow anyways…..

    oh noes ive been thwarted…..

    well…..thats a shame…

    • In a rare show of community support, my municipality is participating in “No Mow April” where all municipal fines for overgrown grass or weeds is suspended in April so that people can have more early flowers for pollinators before other stuff starts coming in.

The collective joy of people having an excuse to NOT mow their lawns for April? Massive.

One asshole whined about how this would increase mosquitos, but he can piss off.

  3. Visited mom today at the hospital. She’s making some progress with the meds the docs put her on. She babbles in both Korean and English, but she’s not switching emotions every 20 minutes though and that’s pretty good. At least she recognized me and didn’t call me her (shithead greedy self centered arrogant Trumper) brother which I am happy to say. I let her talk about nothing for a half hour and walked around with her.

I stayed with mom for dinner (it was “ham”) and she didn’t want to eat the veggies or potato. I made her eat some of the veg and let it go from there. Reminded me of one of my sisters who hated eating veggies as a kid. Dinner was kind of interesting as there was what seemed to be a bickering couple. I asked a nurse if they were married (she laughed a no), but it was like watching Alzheimer Bundy and Peggy Bundy.

I saw dad yesterday. Stayed a while but was late for work. I didn’t give a shit though.

It was a good weekend to talk to my parents. I know I won’t have many more of these left so I enjoy them when I can.

  4. I went to my dad & stepmom’s house. My stepmom is an observant Catholic but no one else is religious, so every holiday is a hassle. Christmas she makes us take the eucharist. Easter she gets a whole basket of stuff blessed at a special mass, so yesterday I went home with a St. Anthony medal. Maybe he’ll come in handy if I lose something. But she gets this particular amnesia about the fact that literally no one but her gives a shit about any of this. We would be just as fine eating and enjoying each other’s company without the holy ghost. My stepbrother said grace, but it of course wasn’t good enough so she redid it, and then threw in a verse for everyone’s dead relatives (I don’t even believe they’re listening, and if they are, that Easter would be particularly special to them on the other side). The whole thing is a test on my patience. And no, I don’t think I’m allowed to opt out. That would cause problems.
