Things I’ve learned recently that kinda blew my mind:
- Clouds float up in the sky, so stands to reason they’re light … but no, the average puffy cumulus cloud weighs more than 1 million pounds (~500,000 kg), which is equivalent to the weight of 100 elephants … or one fully loaded jumbo jet.
- The outer edges of the sun are actually hotter than its surface. And not just by a little! The corona, which is material beyond the surface (like solar flares and flare-ups), can be upwards of 1 to 3.5 million degrees Celsius. The actual surface of the sun is a reasonable-sounding 5,500 degrees C, which isn’t even as hot as a lightning strike here on Earth (about 5x hotter, ~27,500 degrees C.) The sun’s core, meanwhile, is a toasty 15 million C, so, y’know, pack sunscreen if you’re going!
- Snails can have up to 12,000 teeth. I dunno who the hell volunteered to count that, but there it is.
- The Atlantic Ocean is the saltiest of all oceans. Not the saltiest body of water on Earth, of course — there’s a pond in Antarctica that’s so salty it doesn’t even freeze over despite being sub-zero for most of the year — but the Atlantic is notably saltier than other oceans. I suspect this explains a lot about the East Coast in America.
It’s Friday. Onward!
Betcha they made grad students count the snail teeth.
