Afternoon Check-Up

Thermometer on snow shows low temperatures - zero. Low temperatures in degrees Celsius and fahrenheit. Cold winter weather - zero celsius thirty two farenheit.

A friend of mine was/is supposed to drive to Niagara Falls today from PA. He is trying to reschedule his reservations. It doesn’t look good for him right now.

On a personal note, I HATE driving in the snow. Too many people are insane. I used to take Ellie to work when the snow was bad. We took a major highway and there would be at least a dozen cars stuck in the center grass strip. No thank you.

So watcha got?

  1. Still in Cool temp wise SoCal, but the trip started off a small amount of snow.  Dad freaked out*, but I’ve driven this slop to go to work so I didn’t worry.  Originally my parents wanted to drive me to the airport, but I didn’t want them to die (neither did they) so I got a taxi instead (uber was charging $180 for the same trip.)

*my dad was rarely anxious when he was younger, but it came out as his dementia has gotten worse. Also he doesn’t drive at night due to cataract surgery.

Today I’m on my way to visit LA.

  2. I’m totally hooked on the new Pokémon game. My 1st generation Switch has a terrible battery life or I would take it with me everywhere. I literally played for 3hrs last night most of which was spent catching and releasing Magikarp until I found one with the right “nature”. I don’t play hard core (like PvP or that extra stuff). The completionist in me finds it extremely satisfying to catch’m all.

  3. I’ve spent so much time in Chicago driving in the snow that it doesn’t really bother me.  In fact, we’re planning a road trip up there first week of January assuming my leg is better by then (it’s getting there).

    • As a Florida boy I assiduously avoid driving in snow. I’ve done it. I don’t care for it. I prefer to not do it again. Normally I only encountered it when traveling for work and I don’t do that now, so my snow exposure is nonexistent. My 20-year-old daughter has never seen it (I first saw snow at age 27) so we need to take a trip to somewhere it’s snowing at some point. But I don’t want to drive there.

It’s 63 degrees here so we’re all huddling inside.

  4. We are about to break a record for the most sunny days in November but it is clear and pretty cold 32-45.  I don’t mind driving in the snow but here it is more about ice.  I live on a hill and when we have ice you cannot stop on any hills around here.  It is best to just stay home or make sure you don’t go out until the de-icer comes by.

  5. I grew up in WI and lived at 7,000 feet in NM so snow is no big deal for me. I’m more concerned about the people who are so afraid of driving in general that they freak out in the snow and cause wrecks.
Mrs Butcher and I spent the day in Acadia National Park. It’s a few weeks off season so there were maybe 20 other people based on the other cars we saw. It was glorious.

  6. I’ve been able to keep my fall veggies alive through several nights of low 20s temps by covering them. They froze but thawed gently early the next morning.

Last night the low was like 22, today the high was 32, and tonight the low is 18. They never unfroze today as far as I can tell. Leaves where frozen when I uncovered and went to work, still frozen when I recovered when I got home from work. So I think my veggies might be finally dead and gone.

Except the kale in the front yard. I’m pretty sure kale goes “oh baby yes do it again!” when it gets below freezing.
