Ahhhhhhhh [NOT 28/5/24]

Hi, friends!

The Cicada-pocalypse is upon us. There was a slow start in my neighborhood, but now they’re just flying around like confused sex-starved morons. Found one in my basement yesterday, no idea how it got there.

We had storms and tornadoes on Sunday, and the meteorologist pointed out that on the radar map they use to look for airborne debris, there was a good chance enough cicadas were being caught in updrafts to impact the radar!

Luckily, I don’t actually mind their sounds. It’s more annoyance at them flying everywhere.

Are you dealing with them currently? Do you have other summer visitors causing issues?

  1. just water here…..and most of it missed us

hail coming up out of the toilet is wild tho lol

that was last week tho…is just wet now

    you know…summer in the netherlands

its either raining and bearable or like….90+% humidity and hot

  2. My phone lit up an hour ago.  Police raid at the meth house!  10 cop cars but they finally arrested the one that has a warrant & been hiding from them.  Fun pictures the neighbors sending.  One neighbor heard a cop say as they were searching his apartment in the house “looks like we will be here awhile”.  1 down, too many to go!

    • That’s great news! I know that meth house has been a problem for a long time for your neighborhood.

      • Unfortunately it is just one of many at that house & we still have a long fight to get them out of the hood.  They are still there searching so maybe they find enough drugs to seize the house.  It’s a good encouragement for the others to leave!

  3. Thunderstorms rolling in as I type this, but no tornados, and no cicadas. I got the dogs out for a walk before the clouds (and thunder) came in, so that’s a win. We will hunker down at Meme Manor and listen to some LPs until the power goes out.

  4. We had 17 year cicadas several years back. It was pretty insane. There could easily be a thousand or more in a single tree, then multiply that by every tree in a yard by every house on a block. Fortunately they stopped singing at sundown but the noise was like having a leaf blower going all day.

    • I found a cicada in my purse tonight when I went to store. No clue how it got in there. Definitely was not enjoyable being surprised by its presence!

      • The annual cicadas fly with a purpose and direction. The mega-year broods are the most random, unfocused things you can imagine. And there are just so damn many of them.

If you have pets, keep an eye on them. Cicadas are harmless to eat, but some animals go nuts chasing after them.

        • No pets, so I’m not dealing with that. And the neighbors dogs seem completely uninterested in them, thankfully.

  5. I have no clue what is going on around here lately and hope you’re all doing well.

It’s more like brunch here. It’s neither exactly spring nor exactly summer… it’s either the precession of the equinox fighting it out with climate change, or it’s the wet finger in the sky noping out on the discussion because somehow every bit of science is partisan these days.

    • Manchu has been unbearable ever since the Leafs won the Cup. You’re probably asking yourself how that’s possible and how it can be over ahead of schedule, but this place isn’t the only thing that you’ve lost track of.

  6. We have really big fat bumblebees that apparently do not sting but still freak me out with their desire to be in my space.

    • Carpenter bees are even bigger and more intrusive where I live, and fortunately just as harmless.

I’ve been stung by honey bees and sweat bees a few times, but I’ve never known anyone who has ever been stung by a bumblebee or carpenter bee.

      • I don’t think carpenter bees sting but they can bite (they eat wood).  We just evicted some mason bees out of our railroad ties we dug up for my stair project.  They also don’t really sting but can bite.  More importantly, bees can be trained & do math!

        • I have leafcutter bees near my house, too! I’ve never seen them but they like chomping cuts out of my sedum.

        • The colonies also have collective intelligence that outweighs what the individuals have. It’s beyond what I can really grasp.

    • If they’re the ones that like to hover at you like a stereotypical “you talkin to me, bud?” 80s dude, then yes carpenter bees. They’re territorial but not really agressive. Also the male carpenter bees don’t even have stingers, so they’re all bluster.

I don’t know how to get bumblebees annoyed enough to sting. I’ve certainly been startled a lot by them in the garden and every time they’re like *bop* *oh hey there* *ok I’m gonna buzz over here and check out this other flower*

  7. Cicadas are in the area, but not terrible. They only sounds slightly louder than the yearly ones. But my dad lives 9 miles from me and has one of the largest groups in the Chicago burbs, according to the DuPage County Forest Preserve cicada tracker. Up to 85 decibels!
