Sneezing, Itching, Burning?

I was sitting on the porch a couple of days ago when I saw floating on the breeze what at first looked like a puff of smoke, only I realized it was a little cloud of tree pollen. Dammit.

I’m not usually hypersensitive to a first dose of tree pollen, but I find once my allergy flares up, small exposures after that can really nail me. But if I can avoid an initial reaction, I can churn along fine. Fortunately, fall weed pollen doesn’t seem to bug me at all.

Likewise I’m not immediately bothered by mold, but if I happen to get a big whiff of some old musty thing while cleaning out a closet, I’ll often be knocked flat until I can get completely clear.

I’ve never had food allergies, though, and nuts, chocolate, soy, all of the usual suspects don’t bother me. And I don’t have any contact allergies that I know of. Except for poison ivy. Which is horrible.

Got Any Cures?

So what about you, Deadsplintersneezers? Are you allergic to anything? Do you suffer from hay fever, rashes, excess salivation, sphincter palpitations, quivering gums, or other miseries and calamities brought about the impurities around us?

And maybe more valuable, do you have any remedies? I’ve found that basic over the counter stuff like Claritin offers little relief once a full fledged attack hits. Meanwhile the stronger stuff like Diphenhydramine works, but also knocks me out, which has its pluses and obvious minuses.

With poison ivy, soaking the itchy outbreak in the hottest water I can tolerate will bring amazing relief that lasts for hours, although it doesn’t make the rash heal any faster.

Share what you’ve got, if anything, and what you do to counteract it, if anything.

  1. I used to have a slight allergy with eggs that stopped as I got older.

Weed killer used to kill me too. It was worse as a kid because I played on the grass and would react to it during the spring and fall. It was why I always got out of fertillizing the lawn and my dad was stuck with it.  I admit to rejoicing a little when Ontario banned the nastier stuff.

Hay fever, grass (a little is fine), dust and ragweed (hate rag weed.)

One thing I do from time to time when ragweed is especially horrible is put vaseline into my nasal passages. It acts as a barrier between the pollen and the areas that are sensitive to pollen. Seems funny, but I found it works. Learned this from mom.

  2. birch….im allergic to birch

which is a bit of a bitch around here this time of year coz they are fucking everywhere

ive no helpful tips for you either

generally i go by the rule of if its not as bad as an epic hangover…its not worth mentioning

if its worse….yeah maybe stay home

  3. I have seasonal allergies this time of year, most likely pollen.  I do the Costco nose spray & Allerclear.  I learned that if you eat about a tablespoon a day of local honey (needs to be from bees within about a 10 mile radius), you may not have pollen allergies. Works for my daughters but I don’t keep up with it enough to get it to work.

  4. I am slightly allergic to Faithful Hound! Yes. I don’t know why, I’ve had dogs all my life, and I’ve never had a problem with them. And Faithful Hound is very short-haired and has no undercoat, but the vet explained to me that what I am allergic to is his body oils which, because of the lack of undercoat and his short hair, causes my allergies to flare up. This isn’t really a big issue anymore since he stopped his puppy-ish habit of squeezing into the the bed with us over night, but every so often he gets in a mood and just this morning jumped into bed with me and decided he would enjoy a little faux-wrestling. I cannot deny this dog anything his little canine heart desires, so I played along, and he hip-checked me in the face a couple of times, and I’ve been congested and sneezing ever since. He also with one of his hind legs delivered a nearly debilitating punch to one of my kidneys, and that’s when I grabbed his face with my two hands, gave him a big smooch on his noble brow, which he doesn’t like, and told him I had to go rant in the comments section on Deadsplinter.

  5. These days, I’m only really allergic to mold. If it is a mild case, I just sneeze and have a runny nose. If it’s a bad case, it’s causes me to wheeze and cough uncontrollably and my throat tightens up. I should hire myself out like a sniffer dog. HammerZeitgeist: Human Mold Detector at your service.

  6. Ummm nothing? Which is good, because the other person in the home may as well be a bubble boy. To the extent that random full body hives are now a thing, and the allergist just shrugged and said “idiopathic”. The same doctor explained that each person has an “allergy bucket”. Keep it from overflowing into a full blown attack by controlling what is possible. So no to down anything, yes to dust mite covers, daily rx, non-scented everything, special soap, etc. The dogs  are staying, so they are balanced by this other stuff.

    • What a pain. I’ve found that sometimes there’s some particular thing that’s a source of spores or something just needs to be thrown out and everything in contact with it cleaned, and that kind of purging really helps.

  7. Fucking tree pollen is so bad. My sinuses are very unhappy for about 8 weeks in spring every year.

I also am prone to easy outbreaks of contact dermatitis on my face. Like I’d randomly touch my face and get a rash. That’s not as severe as it was a few years ago, I think because I stopped wearing makeup so there’s less low-level irritation of products+cleansing those off.

  8. ha! i figured out whats caused my youtube recs to be all fucked up
