Amateur Hour [DOT 14/2/20]

It’s Friday, it’s Valentine’s Day and we’re headed into a long weekend. It’s quite the trifecta of (hopefully) good things. If you are going out, please tell me you already made your reservations way in advance, otherwise you are screwed. It’s amateur hour!
I should be packing for my long romantic weekend in Chicago, but instead I’m rounding up all the bits of news for you and watching this:

P.S. Rhymes with…

Experience
Some men break your heart in two,
  Some men fawn and flatter,
Some men never look at you;
And that cleans up the matter.

  1. we wont be going out today
itll be a romantic night of video games and hot fuzz (apparantly it came out 13 years ago today) and a large box of ferrero rocher.. works for me 🙂
ive got next week off so we’ll do a night out some other night…when its not full of people trying to be cute :p

  2. Friday happens to be the day I get out of jail, I mean work, early. So the plan is to go get lunch like we usually do, before places are swarmed. Maybe try somewhere we haven’t gone for “special” or something.

I’m really not big on the obligatory nature of VD day.

  3. “I should be packing for my long romantic weekend in Chicago,”

chi-town is a shit-show again megan. yesterday was the coldest day of this winter. today is a bit better but still under zero. at least, stay away from downtown, if you can.

  4. So this interesting one from Krugman at NYT* makes points about messaging. Disagree that running on M4A keeps him from going after Trump on his attack on the safetey net. Also hard pass on healthcare as a top priority being a trap.

Agree on the Bernie not a “technical” Socialist thing, but I’m not sure re-branding would work the way he thinks. One, the Republicans are going to call Anyone the Dems put up a Socialist. Two, people believing he’s an economic socialist is actually part of his appeal to the “left”.

I actually had quite a few people tell me that Warren being a capitalist was their litmus test a few days ago. I didn’t even bother pointing out the memes American Democratic Socialists share stating they’re actually capitalists on social media. Like if they don’t know, why tell them? Still a good set of arguing points if you know anyone turned off by his proud claiming of the label.

I know, right wing rag yada yada. I do this to myself purposefully to avoid echo chamber effect.

  5. “Agree on the Bernie not a “technical” Socialist thing, but I’m not sure re-branding would work the way he thinks.”

The one thing i can think is counter ‘socialist!’ with ‘no, democratic socialist’, ‘revolution!’ with ‘no, political revolution’, ‘venezuela!’ with ‘no, denmark’. Otherwise embrace it. It’s too late for rebranding, isn’t it? Has there been any successful rebranding after the primary in the last 100 years?

I think whoever is the candidate should start hitting fatty on day 0 on SS/Medicare/Medicaid/ACA. Ignore whatever fatty says and keep hitting on SS/Medicare/Medicaid/ACA. Don’t play his game. Keep hitting on SS/Medicare/Medicaid/ACA. If he loses the senior vote he’s toast.

  6. Re: wapo candidate survey

I got warren 17, bernie 15, steyer 9, yang 8, butti 7, gabby 6, klobu 5, deval 5, benet 5, bloom 3, hit by a bus 2. But the survey seems weak. What’s with all the ‘consider’? We can consider to go to Saturn!

I have bernie 1a, warren 1b. I like bernie’s track record. The dude was saying what he says today 50 years ago. But warren is totally fine. Everyone besides bloom and hit by a bus bus gets my vote (I’m in blue IL so it doesn’t matter)
