Still filling in for RIP, and of course I forgot to do the DOT for today. So it’s 12:36 and I woke up abruptly thinking “Oh, crap, the DOT.” It is a measure of my regard for all of you that I did not roll over and go back to sleep. So here I am, bleary-eyed and groggy.
I’m sorry, what?

‘We will demand that the Panama Canal be returned’: Trump issues threat to local officials
This is actually important. These two fools got their asses handed to them, proving that their threats to attack everyone who doesn’t fall in line are empty. As one Republican reportedly said, “They can’t primary all of us.”

And with that bit of uplifting turtle news, I’m heading back to bed. See you in the morning.
I know it’s a typo, but 24 months for 2024 seems appropriate because that’s what it feels like considering what’s happening in Murrica and much of the world.
Oops. In my defense, it was a good three hours after my bedtime.
I’m starting to wonder if I had thrown something a lot more powerful at Nelo Sumk that I could have stopped this stupid fucking timeline from happening.
Probably not… because if I had to go back in time like the Terminator then I’d have to go to NorCal 1999 not Kingston ON 1989/90 and be Max Zorin (villain from the awful Bond movie “A View To A Kill”) to blow up Sillycon Valley so to wipe out the first generation of tech brahs.
Oh, you’ll have to go back further than 1999. Apple Computer was founded in 1976.
The only reason I use 1999 instead of 1976 is that most Sillycon valley people in that era were more like Woz, not Jobs (at least that’s what the media I consumed at the time was saying.)
From my perspective the first true (break things and move fast) barely technical people were mostly Gen Xers of the first internet age.
Eh. You might have given him brain damage and I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
Doubt it, pretty sure he’s taken a lot of brain damage over the years.
When there’s nothing to start with, nobody is going to notice any loss of brains.
Just yesterday I was asking myself, “What happened to Kay Granger?”
It gets even weirder. Apparently her staff checked her out of the facility and propped her up for an event a few months ago? They’ve been conspiring to hide her condition and whereabouts all this time.
Willie was right about ambition. The thing about politics (at least from my own experience in the wonderful world of municipal and office politics) is that getting shit done isn’t about force of will. You can will anything but it ain’t getting done if enough people tell you to get fucked.
You can run over people once or maybe twice, but eventually you find a lot of angry people with your treadmarks on their faces ganging up and coming after you (like one manager I worked for and she had to flee the job as fast as her legs could take her) and they won’t fucking let up until you’re gone.
Another thing is that change is slow because people must be able to accept change. Unlike in business, you can’t fire every stubborn jackass who won’t do what you want. But maybe that stubborn jackass has a point?
Finally, leadership is about trust. If you can’t mostly trust what I fucking do then you aren’t going to follow my ass into the fire.
soooo…bout a week ago i noticed a street lamp at the end of my street throwing sparks and smoking and reported it…noticed it again last night…figured id call in to ask what gives
turns out they had someone drive by on their rounds who reported not seeing sparks or smoke….you know…during office hours….when the lights arent on
i just cant….
We have a neighborhood street the locals call Rape Alley because it’s so dark at night – and uneven sidewalk too, of course.
So anyways, the city called the electric company because they own the streetlights. If a municipality wants more lights, they have to convince the electric company of the need, the electric company installs them whenever, and then bills the city back for it. Big jobs can lead to bills of $50k, and the cities get no input or bid involvement.
Those assclowns sent out someone in the early afternoon to look at the street and go nah, plenty of light on this street. This reminds me of the assclowns they sent to your street to check when the light wasn’t even on that it was working properly.
Anyways, we’re getting some solar streetlights installed on Rape Alley. That’s how you get around the electric company being shitheels.
uhhh…whoops?

gotta suck to take off from one boat only to get shot down by your escort on take off…
thats gotta be a case of someone not paying attention to automated systems right?
Or a tired operator or an overly aggressive one.
Similar to the Iran Air fiasco of 1988 where a cruiser of the same class shot down an Iranian airliner after mistakenly IDing it as an Iranian F-4 Phantom and shooting it down.
So this Riggleman knows stuff, but he’s only gonna spill if he’s threatened? Nice guy.
Rickey Henderson died. I think if you were a relief pitcher starting the 9th with a tie game you’d rather face Barry bonds because at least he’d beat you on one pitch and it would be over fast. Henderson would beat you step by step.
He was a part of the Jays 1993 WS victory of the Phillies. He took a leadoff walk that started the rally which ended with Joe Carter’s HR off Mitch Williams.
I still remember 1989 ALCS where he pretty much destroyed the Jays by himself.
Also the oft told, but not true story of when he saw John Olerud, his teammate from the Jays and other teams and mentioned he also played with a guy who wore a batting helmet on the field and was told “It was me, Ricky.”*
*Olerud had to wear a helmet due to a brain anerysm he suffered in college.
“Billy Long, Trump’s Nominee to Lead the IRS, Touts a Credential That Tax Experts Say Is Dubious”
It’s not even dubious. The guy has a certificate from a three day seminar. Don’t hedge, just call him unqualified.
This is a reminder that GOP framing ends up in headlines without qualification. “Crisis” is a term used by editors in news headlines without qualification for migrants crossing the border, dropping crime rates, and peaceful protestors.
Not so fast. If a three-day course makes you a tax expert, my three years of working for an accounting firm makes me a CPA. That’s how it works, right?
Oh no.
I only know one person who bought an EV. She gave it up after a year or two. Do any of you own an EV? Are you happy with it?
i dont own a car…but most people i know with evs are happy with them….and businesses and buses are very happy with them
but for the most part we have the infrastructure for them too (we also for the most part dont choose to take the car for 2000 mile trips in a weekend) so you know….cant really say how people feeling about evs here pairs up to how people in the us of a feel about them
i do wonder how the used market for evs is going to work out tho…. i mean…batteries dont last forever…and for the time being at least…they are not cheap to replace
(edit) uhh…we also dont have cheap gas…which may be a factor
They definitely need more thought put into swapping out batteries closer to what you do for a flashlight.
On the other hand, fixing the motors is so much less work than a gas engine and all of the related exhaust and cooling guts. Catalytic converters aren’t cheap.
oh yeah…compared to gas powered cars…electrics are almost maintenance free
its just that you can buy another car for the cost of a new battery pack at mo…. maybe not a new one…but still
Yes, multiple people who are multiyear owners with some on a second car.
This article goes into the reasons for pushing back on that McKinsey number, including hedging from McKinsey itself.
https://insideevs.com/news/726008/mckinsey-study-half-ev-buyers/
It looks like a lot of the uncertainty is from the new generation of EV buyers rather than the ones who have had them longer. And that probably reflects a level of saturation in the upper income market of people able to charge at home in a garage vs. people buying cheaper models with less convenient charging options.
I’m “shocked” that McKinsey would do that.
They like the oil/gas business as much as anyone else.
Yeah I would love an EV, but the logistics won’t work for me with charging relative to my daily work commute. And it’s not like I can just charge at home – I have no garage and I don’t have an electrical panel currently able to support charging a vehicle.
Hopefully next time I have to replace a car, I can get a hybrid. I get great mileage for a gas car but would love even better.
I own a 2017 Nissan Leaf. I’m happy with it because I’m not pushing it do things it can’t do like drive long distances.
The Leaf is a commuter car designed for about 99% of my travel (work, shopping, local travel.) I don’t drive long distances (not much need to) so this is why I got the car in 2019 (I bought it used.)
I ended up getting a bigger battery pack because my original died under warranty (Nissan wasn’t happy about that) so I have a lot less range anxiety.
The one thing is if you don’t plan your trips then you will hate owning an EV. Being the planning type, I don’t mind as I haven’t been stranded running out of battery juice yet.
I have an EV & love it. Everyone I know that has one love’s theirs. Seattle has a huge percentage of them & growing. That story is just more bullshit propaganda.
