An Ode to the Potato [NOT 2/11/25]

Hi, friends!

Happy Sunday!

Aside from a World Series gam, how did your weekend go? Anything good happen?

I broke done another one of my summer vegetable raised beds, it’s too cold, nothing else was going to finish ripening. Even if somehow the beans wanted to produce more flowers, the pollinators are done for the year. Beneath the trellis was a sweet potato vine I’d planted as ground cover to help reduce weeds and keep moisture from evaporating as much. I had no expectation of any actual potatoes, the vine spent most of the season getting almost no direct sun. And what did I find? 3 wonderful sweet potatoes just ready to get dug up.

Another grow bag which I failed (year 4! of 4!) to grow zucchini in? I did spring potatoes in that and tossed a few that were too small to eat when I harvested them back in the bag before (failing) growing zucchini. Those lil taters definitely sprouted and I got 4 lovely spuds.

So, if you want a low stress garden plant to grow? Consider potatoes. I planted sweet potatoes in a few places just as ground cover and they are the gift that keeps on giving. I planted some seed potatoes – no clue the variety, neighbor gave them to me in April – and with no effort except some watering here I am with lovely delicious potatoes.

  1. I will eat sweet potatoes. Next year I’m going to suggest that we plant some. I don’t know how to do it, but I’m assuming between the two of us we can figure it out.

  2. Take it from the guy in Idaho, potatoes are easy to grow. It’s the only thing I bothered to grow this year, because I was depressed and thus lazy. Planted them way late and they still grew and outdid last year’s haul.
