I mean, we didn’t really go anywhere.
But it’s Monday, so back to the office grind. I hope you all had a great weekend, and that those who are mothers had a great day yesterday.

Food you definitely CANNOT eat
Way to start your Monday. Have a great one!
…it certainly seems to be a very monday-ish kind of a monday…but hopefully not as cursed as that grated chicken monstrosity at the end there?
There were at least 8 other mass shootings over the weekend as well. It’s the new murican passtime.
Grating raw chicken, yuck.
Horse racing should be banned, check out horse racing wrongs if you dare.
…I think I saw something suggesting there were as many as a dozen incidents over the weekend that qualified for the mass shooting tag…& that we’re around 130 days into this year but approaching the 200 mark on that particular tally
…& yet the NRA still tried to make mothers’ day about guns…something about not raising victims…with no apparent sense of irony?
I just googled that, holy crap! The kid in that picture is scary as hell. I have never been so glad to be a hermit as right now.
…yeah…it’s messed up…I generally have some issues trying to get images to embed in the comment section but I didn’t even consider inflicting that one on anybody
…also…stuff like painting guns pink & actively marketing them at children is several kinds of fucked up that I can’t for the life of me understand any kind of justification for…they’re pretty much the definition of not-a-toy?
My daughter has a pink Daisy BB gun, and she is a dead shot with it.
…no offense intended (I kinda hope that bit goes without saying but you never know online)
…to me BB guns do pretty much qualify as toys (I guess there could be some that are more powerful than any of the ones I’m familiar with that could make me regret that but afaik?) so I don’t have any issues with that…I guess what we used to call air-guns (in the UK) when I was a kid would be sort of a grey area since those are mostly not much use for anything beyond target shooting but technically can injure/maim/kill stuff/people under some circumstances…& those were/are definitely marketed at kids
…the sort of thing I was thinking of in that comment though were more by way of being things like the semi-auto “assault” weapons I’ve seen…one of which the kid in the NRA mothers’ day thing was sporting…it just messes with my head when I see that stuff?
I’m honestly not sure how horse racing stays in business. I mean, a football or baseball game stays on for hours, so there’s significant advertising revenue there to give networks a reason to broadcast them. But the Derby takes like 3 minutes. I actually saw the Kentucky Derby this year in a bar and the server brought our order and when I looked up it was over. I guess the prizes are enough to keep the horse owners coming back, but I don’t see how it stays afloat as a industry.
Tax write-offs? Just a guess. Aren’t most horse owners rich as fuck anyway?
It is all about gambling.
https://horseracingsense.com/where-purse-money-from-horse-racing/
That’s basically what I figured. We had dogtracks in Florida until recently when they were outlawed. But they’d been in severe decline for decades (which is why they didn’t have the money to buy off politicians and fight the amendment that outlawed them). I just wondered how solvent the industry is. I mean, gambling, sure, but it’s an annual event that’s not terribly well-known any more. It’s not like a casino that’s throwing off massive income on a daily basis.
@bryanlsplinter The race you saw was only one of around a dozen that ran on Derby Day. Our local track has races scheduled for every half hour between 1 and 5 pm. On special event days there might be more. And people are betting on every one. As well as buying food and drinks all day. The tracks offer paid tours of morning workouts and what is called the backstretch or backside, the horses being walked, bathed, etc. when the horses aren’t running live they have simulcasts of the tracks that are running and the regulars are there betting on those races.
And don’t forget the milliners! It’s a big day for them, you have to have a fancy hat to wear to the derby.
That makes sense. I keep thinking of it as an isolated event, but it’s not. You don’t build the track and all the infrastructure and use it once a year.
There are six major tracks in the US that share the big purse meets. They each get two months out of the year for live racing. In addition to the simulcasts they have horse shows and sales. They are also in demand as wedding venues, and other big events although I’m sure the cost is exorbitant. They’re raking it in.
Nobody sings the truth better than Randy!!!
Heah-heah. . . .
🤣
I am going to pass on the mass shooting news today.
However – that chicken nightmare – oh my. If she had formed the glop into cones or balls, coated it in bread crumbs and fried, it may have been a chicken croquette.
…I don’t know about anyone else…but I think it was the part where she said “it’s better than pizza” that broke me?
Almost expelled coffee at that point….
Bitch, nothing is better than pizza. I will come to blows over this.
@MatthewCrawley ALERT!!!!
I just finished a delightful call with our dear Cousin M, and he sends his regards to one and all. He has been in hospital for 15 days. He hopes to be moved to a rehab in the next day or so. He had the previous ongoing leg issues coupled with infections and miscellaneous other things, and he is so very ready to get out. He also mentions that his physical therapist is a Bond villain.
While he is in a phone dead zone, bad wifi in general, has a terrible old phone, and is cut off from communication for the most part, he is able to read DeadSplinter each day. And we are killing him, because he says “I have the perfect comments to make, and I can’t do it with my phone.”
So Mattie says hello, misses us all, and appreciates the well-wishes. Do give him a hello, he will see it here!
Get well soon CousinM!!
…I realize it’s scant consolation but I always assume our esteemed cousin matt would have said something entirely more interesting than I’ve managed to…with the added bonus of a potted anecdote that show appears to have been presciently cultivated years ago for just such a moment
…am of course sorry to hear that the leg has been inflicting further levels of purgatory upon him & do hope that his recovery is swift & as painless as the physio permits…because he certainly gives this place a spring in its step…& it is safe to say his absence has been both noted & mourned
@MatthewCrawley Your screen name has turned out to be somewhat weirdly prophetic. I hope you get your tingle back.
I was noticing the lack of his comments, sending out best wishes for a speedy recovery. I can comfort him by telling him that all good PT’s are either Bond villains or Nazi war criminals. If they are not making you hurt and work your butt off, they are not doing a good job. It will pay off if you follow their advice and do all those stretches and exercises.
I’ll second that. PT is the worst, but that’s by design.
I hope you’ll feel better soon. In the meantime we’ll try to keep Meg and the Blacksmiths from doing anything rash, but that will only work for so long. Then you’ll find yourself in the back seat of a Mini Cooper with your leg hanging out of the window being licked by dogs while Meg speeds down the interstate.
You say that like it’s a bad thing!
Get better soon Cousin M! We’ve definitely been missing you around here.
If you need us to spring you, I can form a team. I’m only about 5 hours away.
@MegMegMcGee
The Blacksmiths are a go. We can use our dogs as a distraction.
I’ll collect you on the way. We can all fit in my Mini Cooper, right?
@MegMegMcGee
We can pull a Romney and put the dogs on the roof.
Wondered where @MatthewCrawley was. Get well soon, please!
Jettison the leg, get a strap on, and get back to civilization!!!
@MatthewCrawley
We hope to have you back here soon. After you are up and around it is time for a new phone. No more of this disappearing act.
@myopicprophet
may i assume changes were made? I now have to log in multiple times a day every day. Apologies if this has been covered.
are you logged in on more than one browser or device?
My iPhone and ThinkPad from work log me out basically every day. My home desktop (Dell) rarely logs me off.
No. I stay (or used to) logged in on a tablet. Occasionally I log in on my work desktop, but not in between checking threads on the tablet. I haven’t done that since last week.
@MatthewCrawley – I thought you pulled a stunt like your namesake and dumped us for a bigger show. Hope you get to feeling better soon!
