What Are You Waiting To Show Us?

What are some unusual clothes you have in a closet, dresser, or box in storage? Things you rarely wear but you still hang on to.

I’ll go first: my collection includes two vintage Hawaiian shirts, a man’s kimono, a tux, a bright orange shirt made of patterned cloth imported from Africa, and a one piece union suit (no trap door).

Do you have any novelty socks, old gag T-shirts, prom dress, or platform shoes? Top hat and tails, fancy beaded dress like a flapper would wear, 1970s leisure suit, or platform shoes?

Did you keep an old football uniform, or maybe you have your grandmother’s wedding dress in the style of the 1940s? Surely you have one of those hats that holds a couple of beer cans with straws, or possibly a full suit of armor. Some of those things could be really cool, like a pair of boots your cowboy uncle wore in the 1960s.

Time to share what you have mothballed, Deadsplinterwearers!

  1. i had a Bugle Boy t-shirt that i acquired – used – as an additional piece in a clothing trade in 1994. i FINALLY threw it out about a month ago. i mostly used it as a comfy/pj shirt after briefly wearing it in 1999 whilst operating large saws. the sharp edges of the bottom cross cuts of the 4×8′ boards gradually caused a bunch of tiny holes at the front, which became very large and stretched out over the years. still, i refused to throw it out because it was TOO comfortable. i knew, however, that i’d procrastinated long enough, and it was time to send it to pasture.

i miss my Bugle Boy comfy shirt as NOTHING compares to it like whomever Sinead O’Connor was singing about. i will never forgive myself for throwing it out and, for that reason, i never deserve to bask in something so comfortable ever again.

    • I only remember the pants. The ads for those were everywhere. They were such an icon of that time. I don’t know if the cast of Friends wore them, but it sure seems like they did.

  2. I have my old university leather jacket.

When I first brought it home, it reeked of stale beer because you’re supposed to inaugurate it with beer and then coat it in gentian violet (purple surgical dye) because that was Queens engineering tradition.

My jacket smelled so bad that my dog refused to go anywhere near it and she loved to chew on leather things.

It doesn’t stink anymore but it is a faded relic of stupider days.

It still fits and I refuse to part with it.

  3. I’m an old clothes hoarder.  I have vintage aloha shirts, 80’s Quiksilver surf wear, old volleyball tournament & surf contest swag & a few Sonics jerseys.

    • How many still fit?

It’s strange how clothes can mysteriously shrink after many years.

    • Shirts still fit, I definitely don’t look as good in my Jose Cuervo v-ball tournament tank tops any more but I’m sure they just shrunk, right?

      • It’s funny how a couple of shirts I saved from college don’t fit.

I will note however that my shoe size is one size bigger now, and that has nothing to do with weight gain since then.

        • Yeah,  don’t ask about my vintage board shorts fitting.

  4. Not germane, but I decided to hunt for that REM “Furry Happy Monsters” video that I saw here on D/S, and I found it, and then was offered this:

I almost fell out of my seat. Shock and awe. Starring a cast of like 1,000 muppets. That should be the title of my memoir, Night of 1,000 Muppets.

  5. I keep this outfit WAY in the back of my closet, with my Nik Nik shirts and JNCO wide leg jeans.

    • You need a great pair of gams to pull that off.

But something tells me you have a pair of jeans you borrowed from Iggy Pop and never gave back, or maybe a flannel shirt with a front pocket that Kurt Cobain burned a hole in with his cigarette by mistake because the bar was too crowded.

    • I say, you can never have enough ermine in your life. Or in your closet.

    • Also, and this is very late, Ancien Régime hot.

  6. My best/most fun pieces are probably my Betseyville “Barbie Shoes”–i’ve had ’em for over a decade, and they *aren’t* actually associated with Barbie or the recent movie…

But the bow *is* obnoxious pink plastic, and they LOOK like a damn Barbie shoe!😍🥰🤗💖

And they are honest-to-god and *surprisingly* comfortable to wear, because they’re *basically* just an updated “heels” version of the old wooden “Dr. Scholls” summer sandals… in a 6.5, because the front has a pretty big platform (about 3/4″), the “rise” only ends up making them a 2″ heel. EASY on the feet, even though they *look* like a 3″ heel😉😁💖

    I also have a near-exact match of this Fringed Buckskin Jacket from Worthpoint;

    https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-fringed-deerskin-jacket-uber-420346207

Mine DOES have some stains–particularly on the sleeves…

But *mine* was originally owned by my Auntie, she used to wear it horseback riding in the 1960’s & 70’s. I also have her (Reversible!) Letterman’s jacket, and a Plaid wool winter coat from the 1960’s.

After she died, no one on her side of the family wanted them, and my cousin–her daughter didn’t want them, either. I was ALWAYS into fashion & vintage stuff, so my uncle asked me if *I* would like them, and they’ve been mine since High School.

The plaid coat needs new buttons, but it still fits. The buckskin *can* be worn, but i need to drop a good 20-30 lbs, if I wanna zip it😉

And the Letterman’s Jacket fits fine.

The other really fun/silly thing i own, are my “Work Pajamas.”

In ECSE, we have “celebration week” once in the spring, and once in the fall (fall happens *usually* the week of Halloween).

One of the days in each Celebration Week is “Pajama Day,” and my first year in the district, *most* of the Paraprofessionals had onesie pajamas…

So when I saw a set of Eeyore pajamas on Clearance for about $25.00, after Christmas I snagged ’em.

They’ve been my “Work Pajamas,” ever since!😉😁😆💖
