Love em or hate em – everyone has an opinion about musicals. So let’s hear em! Do you love them – if so what’s your favorite? Do you hate them? Even if you do – is there one that you might like a song from?
There are so many it’s hard to choose. I’m going with…
Have fun! As always, thanks for your support and stopping by.
The answer to last week’s poll is A) Heath Ledger – It was during The Patriot. Mel Gibson was kind of a cut up and there were a couple of very heavy emotional scenes that he and Heath were in that when they would yell “Cut!” he would turn into a goofball. Also, the more tense it made Heath – the goofier Mel got.

This week’s poll:
Myo LOVES musicals!
Ugh.
Hmmm, if this is considered a musical then this is my favorite!
followed by this…
My Fair Lady
i am generally not a fan….but i like the old ones ( i mean shit..i probably know every song from mary poppins or chitty bang bang by heart)
thats probably nostalgia
tho really…the problem is…with many of the newer ones….i just dont like the music…and if i dont like the music i lose the will to watch

I adore musicals
I saw “Little Shop of Horrors” in London’s West End and I should have saved the program, because it came with a fairly lengthy glossary insert to explain some of the unfamiliar Americanisms to a British audience.
As George Bernard Shaw said, “England and America are two countries separated by a common language.”
A Dick Van Dyke Two-Fer
I could not love musicals more. From the header image I have seen every one, at least once, sometimes on Broadway, except for one: La La Land. I only resisted because the reviews I read were so scathing but I see on imdb and Rotten Tomatoes that people seemed to like it, and it’s streaming. I think over the weekend I will fill this void in my college of musical knowledge.
I am ambivalent about musicals, much to Mrs. Butcher’s chagrin. Her father made his living making industrial shows and she’s got the musical bug herself. For me, there are a few that I find watchable, such as My Fair Lady listed above, but mostly they annoy me. However, the Best Musical Of All Time is, and has always been, The Blues Brothers.
Also: I’m going to keep voting Ian Somerhalder until I get it right.
Today might be your day!
That is my strategy as well with Ian whatshisface!
I can take ‘em or leave ‘em. Growing up I did love West Side Story. If I had to pick a couple of faves I’d say Rocky Horror and Hairspray.
…I don’t think of myself as a fan of musicals…but the blues brothers & bugsy malone are probably two of my favorite films so maybe I am really?
…& hamilton really is pretty great
…on the nostalgia thing I figure west side story…& calamity jane
…also there was a stage show called return to the forbidden planet that I liked a lot…they also did a macbeth-based one called from a jack to a king…so…I guess I like more musicals than I think?
oh wait…..jesus christ superstar is another one i could probably sing backwards
Some of y’all are stretching the definition of musicals. So here goes:
Favorite of all time: Phantom of the Opera
I sang this at a bunch of auditions.
Did this at a friend’s wedding.
My favorite song from the score.
I love musicals, even the cheesy ones. But several haven’t aged well (and they were showing it even when student Meh performed in school productions).
Show of hands: whose school did Fame and cast a white Leroy? ✋✋
But these were my two favourites as a teen and they remain high up there still. They embodied, in different ways, the excitement and avant-garde approach to theatre opening up in the ’90s and with it enlivened an often-corny genre.
RENT:
Cabaret (Sam Mendes revival):
I love musicals! Live theater is my favorite but I also enjoy film musicals.
Favorite movie musical is probably Hairspray. First of all the source material is great and the songs are wonderful. Aside from Amanda Bynes who was 21, they actually cast high school age actors to play the high schoolers (looking at you, Grease, and your completely failure here). Adam Shankman excelled at the choreo and the big production numbers are just a delight.
I couldn’t name a favorite live show since there’s been so many that were so damn good. I’m irrationally annoyed that they made a movie out of Dear Evan Hansen because I saw that on tour a few years ago and it was sooooo good. But Ben Platt looks WAY TOO OLD to pass for a high schooler.
Put me in the “Hate ’em” category. I grew up with “Jesus Christ Superstar”, and from that decided that musicals and religion both suck (8-year-old me was brilliant).
Are you old enough and scarred enough to remember “Cop Rock”?
@Lymond, for fuck’s sake, do not tell me you had something to do with this.
