How Did You Sleep Last Night?
So, Deadsplinterdreamers, what’s your ideal bed? Soft mattress, firm mattress, featherbed, waterbed? Or maybe you’ve never slept better than on a futon on the floor. Maybe you’re one of those lucky people who can sleep on anything and your back is fine — recliner, couch, air mattress, or the dreaded pull out sofa bed, none of it matters?

If you go camping and sleep on the ground, can you adjust? For that matter, if you stay in a hotel on an unfamiliar mattress, does that ruin your sleep?
And how particular are you regarding your sleeping environment? I’m pretty flexible, with the the one exception of muggy air, or even worse, muggy air without even a fan to keep it moving. Do you need white noise to block out surrounding noise? Do you startle awake at the sound of a passing car? Does the smell of someone making coffee jumpstart you? Or are you the kind of person who needs to turn the alarm up to 11 because you can sleep through anything?
Share what works for you as far springs and coils and cushions before you head off to slumberland tonight.
hard…just gimme room to sprawl and im happy….but soft matrasses are the suck
tbh….. fuck matrasses…… just give me the floor and a really floofy pillow
I have requirements. Firm mattress. Air conditioning, approximately 76 degrees. A fan that blows across me. This is both cooling and keeps any stray mosquitos that slipped in away from me, because those fuckers love me. White noise machine, not too loud. A weighted blanket across my feet. When it’s cooler, I may use a comforter. Socks. Now that I am aged, I sleep in socks. I don’t wear them during the day, I’m mostly barefoot. But at night? Socks. Come at me, I give no fucks.
I also sleep approximately six hours a night. That doesn’t make me happy, but that’s what I do. I dearly envy my daughter who can sleep 12 hours at a stretch.
I’m happy with my Sealy-Posturpedic. I’m a side-sleeper, so it’s still kind of tricky for me to find a sleep position that doesn’t leave me with sore shoulders.
Someday, I’d like to try one of those super-expensive mattresses.
I need a new mattress. I’ve been putting off buying one because it’s so confusing. Do I want coils, hybrid? Do I still need box springs? I don’t want something too firm or too soft. And they’re so damn expensive. Is it better to go to a furniture store or one of the many matter stores? Can I just get one at Costco? HELP!
Mattress aside, I can only sleep with a shredded foam pillow. It took me years to find the right one and I take it with me when I travel. I like the room cold but lots of blankets. I need a fan and preferably white noise but I can get by without it if I have to. And the room has to be dark, pitch black. And my dog.
I don’t think box springs do much except add a bit of ventilation and elevation. I think I’ve read that Costco is a good source, but I bet it’s one of those things worth going to the library and reading Consumer Reports to find out.
I’m in the same boat @hannibal If you get any closer to deciding we can compare notes.
For sure!
I say no to a box spring unless you want the extra height of it. I currently have a padded board between my mattress and the bed frame.
I don’t care about added height. I’d just as soon not pay for something I don’t need.
I cannot sleep on a water bed. In my experience they are best suited for another activity… if you catch my drift (pun intended).
I’m a hot sleeper so I never get under covers or sheets in the summer and the ceiling fan has to be going. I also hate soft pillows so I need a dense one. Hell just give me a cinder block to put my head on and I’ll be fine.
i couldnt stay asleep again
so now you must all pay
I grew up in the hot bedroom thanks to parents not being able to afford to keep the house cool and my room being farthest from the AC and getting all day sun.
So the good news is I’m able to fall asleep pretty damn easily when it’s stuffy or hot. Currently my AC is set at 79 and it’s fine. I got a ceiling fan and a small fan by the vent.
I like a really firm mattress. Even since the bedbug situation like 7 years ago, I’ve used an IKEA mattress on their wooden slats for the base, not even a box spring.
I’m also short and at the time I bought it, had a senior dog who liked to snuggle. So admittedly a lot of the appeal was that the bed is lower to the ground in the frame and easier for me or the old doggo at the time to access.
I need a new mattress at some point probably, but also I don’t want to deal with how to coordinate special trash pickup to take the old one.
I prefer a firm mattress as I sleep on my back which is fine but I snore. Have to have constant air flow and prefer it cool which can be problematic in the summer time.
I get about 7 1/2 hours of sleep but sometimes up to 9 depending on the much physical labor I do or what drugs I work with. The worst is Mirtazapine where if you inhale some of the active then odds are really good you’re going to have fucked up dreams (Beetlejuice fucked up kind of dreams.) I stupidly took off my mask during a really dusty part of the process and ended up sleeping 16 miserable hours (due to fucked up dreams)!
I helped change the respirator requirements after a number of workers had the same issues.
I had a waterbed from high school & loved it. Â Now I have a sleep number which I set super low & wife sets at double my number. Best invention ever!
