Black Friday! [DOT 24/11/23]

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I had a pretty good day and got to see a lot of friends which was fun. It kinda sucks though because I’ve been doing lots of things where my brother would usually be there and he’s just…not. 🙁

What are you guys up to today? Anyone braving the stores? Oh and listen to this. I have somehow been roped into helping my HS ex-boyfriend’s little brother move tomorrow.

  1. I’m guessing the Niagara Fall bridge incident is a DUI that went horribly wrong. Can’t stop people from doing stupid things under the influence… /looking back on my life/ or not under the influence for that matter.

      • YIKES! I had a similar problem with the Leaf because I had placed a wrong sized mat on the drivers side and it got caught on the accelerator pedal. I nearly smashed into the back of someone but was lucky I pounded the brake (which loosened the pedal). At first I thought it was a problem with the Leaf so I went to the dealer.  Nope, the damn mat.

Or a combo of the two.

        • unintended acceleration is no fun

experienced it on an old yamaha motocross bike i had at the farm in england…

code brown doesnt begin to describe it

if thats whats happened i really feel for those people….the last moments must have been pure terror

…. if they were just utterly shitfaced im less sympathetic tho…

      • I inherited an Audi 5000 in high school that was a total piece of shit.  Other than being the only 5 cylinder car that I know of, it was famous for the gas pedal sticking.  It happened to me, luckily instead of panicking, I was able to just shift to neutral and brake.  I parked the car and never drove that thing again.

    • My first thought was DV. It’s not uncommon to use the threat of wreaking the car in abusive situations. Combined with alcohol it may have gone further than intended.

  2. One thing I have learned is you don’t cheat or steal from rich people or you will pay.

John Rust is probably going to regret this. Instead of sucking back the profits on his price fixing scheme, he’s gonna find himself in a legal scramble. Sounds like his legal defense is just a thin shell and will crack under pressure making sure the yolk’s on him.

  3. im going with the last 3 for sure….

oh hell make it the last 4….i somehow cant picture you saying uh oh…that seems like an inside thought…and the remaining 2 also seem…too…uhh… well…softly softly

  4. Had a really busy day yesterday and got some good news on the mom front. It turns out that going full dementia means the caseworkers have a spot for mom at a long term care facility (3 months vs the usual 18-24 month waiting list for mentally healthy seniors.)

The staff at the Respite Home will get a break from mom, too as she’s going to go at the end of the month.

Not sure what dad’s going to do or how he’s going to react. I’m going to make sure he can visit mom as much as I can until he gets in. Also not sure how I’m going to break the news to mom either.

Going to be expensive but so be it.

Also had to tell the family in Korea about mom and dad because cousins were upset that they weren’t returning any calls. Sigh. I didn’t want to do that till everything got settled.

None of this would be possible if I were stuck on day shift. Would have missed the opportunity and dealing with family on break. Yeah, I’m “sure” I wouldn’t be making “any” work mistakes at all being so distracted like that.

/waves middle fingers in the direction of my dept management/

  5. Monday, the DC Court of Appeals heard arguments over Trump’s gag order in the 1/6 trial.

Trump’s lawyer tried to argue most evidence was too old to be relevant.

Wednesday in the NY fraud trial, the NY AG’s office filed 275 pages, single spaced, of transcriptions of threats received just by Judge Engoron’s clerk after Trump’s recent online attacks.

On Thanksgiving day itself, Jack Smith’s office filed a copy of the NY AG’s list of threats to the DC court. Meanwhile, on Thanksgiving Trump continued his attacks on the NY court.

He’s going to get worse. There is no redemption narrative, no both sides storyline, no “it’s complicated” coverup.

      • It’s absolutely insane stuff, and only the tip of the iceberg. Imagine what E. Jean Carroll, for example, has gotten, or even some random witness in the Georgia case.

The press has a golden opportunity for clicks and engagement by revealing and exploring the madness in a responsible way, but because that would require treating the GOP as a deeply broken party compared to Democrats, they retreat into vague reporting that buries the truth.

Wednesday the NY Times ran this article about threats to election workers larded up with vague references of a pressure cooker environment which waited until the 16th paragraph to suggest any connection to Trump and the right, and of course drew no connection to Trump’s violent rhetoric in any other context.

        https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/22/us/fentanyl-letters-election-workers-threats.html

There’s no way to rationalize this in terms of either engaging audiences or thoughtful reporting. It’s just going through the motions.

        • …do we need to mention the asshole earlier to know at this stage that the obvious sub-text is obvious?

…the whole thing seemed to be more about how the climate produced by a phenomenon that’s been widely reported on in truck-loads of articles…some even from the NYT…effects the people who would normally do the work…to which extent…though the partisan nature of those causing the problem is as obvious as it’s been throughout…that part is arguably a secondary issue compared to the primary one that it may have successfully caused a potential shortfall in the numbers of volunteers required…so I don’t know which motions you feel it’s going through but if I complained about every article that wasn’t the one I thought it could more usefully have been I’m pretty sure I’d have no difficulty laying that charge on just about every publication I can think of…so I’m not sure I entirely follow what makes this one a particular example of something beyond that…”behold, the plight of the poll worker” isn’t exactly a fresh take…so is the objection that it reads as filler…or something else?

  6. incidentally….if anyone cares….ed sheerans hot sauce is not bad

it tastes pretty familiar tho…kinda thinking they slapped a label on an already existing hot sauce….and then doubled the price

its okiday…but not worth the mark up…. imo of course
