Changing Tastes [NOT 3/10/22]

Hi, friends!

Ugh, Monday.

I’m currently brewing some coffee that I will chill overnight and drink tomorrow. This is a reasonably new thing for me, as I’ve only enjoyed coffee in any form for about the last year. And even then, I still prefer it iced.

You got anything that is a relatively new taste? Music, clothing, food, drinks, etc? I also never would drink beer until about the last year, although that is still a middling thing. Like it’s not my first choice but I’ll take some beers over a diet coke. Which is my least-favorite diet soda.

  1. New tastes? Not anymore..as I’m getting older, the acid reflux/GERD is getting worse, and more of my favorite foods trigger it. And I don’t want to be tied to taking Prilosec every damn day, which only masks the issue. So it’s been no chocolate, less pizza, no hot sauce…you know, all the fun stuff. So the search for new tastes is one for food that doesn’t make me burp up hot lava at 1am.

    I’m swell at parties.

    • Years ago in the days I worked at ye olde Target, I had a handful of coworkers who were all dudes under 25 who already took Prilosec every day for bad acid reflux. And I was like hey maybe you shouldn’t drink all that Mountain Dew and energy drinks constantly? Like maybe those are contributing and 4 energy drinks/day plus a bunch of acidic soda isn’t a good idea on the old esophagus?

    • I was thinking of switching to a fancy Fossil fitness tracker watch when my current fitbit bites the dust, but I was so annoyed trying to replace a busted purse strap from Fossil that now I don’t want to give them more of my money. So there went that fancy watch tracker plan. LOL

  2. I have a very select group of foods that I’ll eat. So I don’t try new things very often. This summer I tried almond milk for the first time and I liked it. Lately I’ve been toying with the idea of trying oatmeal. I know, it’s ridiculous that I’ve never eaten oatmeal but it’s true. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • Oatmeal is one of those foods that I find completely variable based on how much liquid it’s made with. I like drier oatmeal that gets really dense when I cook it. Like I made oatmeal for breakfast and “should” be 1 cup rolled oats and 2 cups water or milk, microwave for 2 minutes. I use closer to a 1:1 ratio of oats to water and then once it’s out I let it sit for a few minutes to solid up and then add stewed fruit on top.

But like someone makes runny oatmeal? Ewww no thank you that’s too slimy for me.

Which is also kinda weird because I love overnight oats and those are a little runny too sometimes.

What can I say, brains are weird.

      • I think I’d prefer it dryer myself. I’m a little worried about a weird runny texture. It may take some time to work up to it. Maybe I should just stick with oatmeal cookies

        • Irish or Steel-cut, ALLLLLLL the way, @Hannibal!😉

Definitely *try* some regular oatmeal! But if (like me!) you find the texture to be a bit too, “Boogers in a bowl of snot,” get yourself some McCann’s Steel-Cut Oatmeal!

You should be able to find at least the can/box of plain/unflavored somewhere near you.

The Maple Brown Sugar, instant variety is *my* personal favorite😉

Irish oatmeal is basically a diced/”chopped up” oat grain, as opposed to the flattened-out “traditional” version. You get a *little* bit of slimyness, with Irish oatmeal, but nowhere near the amount you do with *rolled* oats!

There’s also a bit of “chew” to Irish oatmeal….

If you’ve ever had & liked Barley (aka Barleycorns😉) or Wild Rice in your soups or hotdishes, & liked their texture, you’ll probably like steel-cut oats, too, because it has a similar “bounce” against your teeth, as you eat/chew it😉💖

      • I love thick, chewy oatmeal and make it about like you do. I also like adding fruit or jam, raisins, spices, brown sugar, or even making a more savory version with cheese in it. O-H makes the instant kind with fruit flavours (peaches and cream, blueberry, strawberries and cream) and adds cheese, which is also good.

    • Yeah, I’m the same way.  I eat a pretty simple diet.  It gets me out of cooking a lot because my wife says I cook “boring”.  I only use a handful of spices/flavorings:  salt, pepper, turmeric, cayenne, apple cider vinegar.  That’s about it.

When she goes out of town I eat virtually the same thing every day for dinner.  Piece of meat, steamed vegetable, salad.  Orange and then blueberries and full-fat yogurt for dessert.  Dark chocolate at the end as a digestif.  Lots of black coffee.

  3. I think I’m going to get a bike? As in a bicycle, not a motorcycle.

There’s a nice Schwinn (sp?) Cruiser in my brother’s garage so I’m going to bring it home next time I’m in Cleveland.

He also has a nice Triumph motorcycle but I don’t think that’s for me. And I already sold the little Vespa to someone who will adore and care for it properly.

  4. My mom always said I used to be a picky-ish eater as a kid, but she discovered what true picky eaters were when my sister came along. I will generally try just about anything put in front of me, as long as there are no raw onions or raw peppers in it (texture thing).

I used to hate LaCroix and similar unsweetened fizzy waters but have learned to like them over the last few years. The only one I’ve tried that I didn’t like was grapefruit. I’m not a big fan of bitter flavours. Sour, yes, bitter, no. I didn’t like beer for the same reason… the bitterness of the hops was unappealing. I discovered dark beers, like Modelo Negro, and I do like that type. I can choke down a Bud or whatever if that’s my only option, but I still don’t like it!
