Letting It Fly

Red and White Stripes of US Flag

What Is Flying

As you would expect, in my city one of the most common ways people decorate their homes is by flying a flag. And like almost everywhere in the United States, the most common flag is the U.S. flag.

Most are the traditional flag that has flown since Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. Sometimes, you’ll see an older version of the U.S. flag, like this one flown last summer in front of one of the homes in the historic mill town shown in last week’s post.

But lately a new flag is being flown.

Showing the Colors

If it’s not the flag, then it’s the colors.

Solidarity

And then there are the times the flag appears in a message of solidarity.

  1. Totally relevant, as always, I once saw a production of Gypsy where an American flag pops up, but it’s around WWII and they used a modern (50-star) flag. I am so irredeemably nutty I was so disturbed by this that after the performance I tracked down—he wasn’t the stage manager, but someone who had a similar role, and I mentioned this. “How can you tell?” “Why does the flag have 50 stars?” “Hasn’t it always?” The guy must have been in his 50s. Betsy Ross must have rolled over in her grave.

  2. I’m not seeing many Ukrainian flags here. But because it’s the South, you must have a wreath on your door, and there are lots of blue/yellow and sunflower door decorations. I may make one this weekend.

  3. I haven’t seen very many Ukrainian flags in my area – just the normal virtue signalling American flag – the 50 state one. We’re at the lake this week which is rural southern and incredibly red. Almost every dock around us flies the American flag – or a Trump flag. The lake house belongs to my aunt who is not a MAGA but is a tried and true South Carolinian republican(which presents it’s own issues) – before she could put up an American flag on her dock though – we commandeered it and hoisted the ol Jolly Roger. I think between my part of the fam and the lesbian couple that lives across the street – we’re the only “blue” people in town. Ga Senate Candidate Herschel Walker’s mother lives here too.

    • You might be surprised. I’m not saying a majority, but one of the malignant things the pundits do is try to gaslight people into thinking red states are more uniformly reactionary than they are.
