The End of Oregon
At the end of our vacation, we stayed at Cannon Beach, and as it turned out, it’s appeared in a bunch of movies which I’ve never really seen. Scenes from The Goonies were shot here, and it’s remembered by this sign in a parking lot:

I guess Haystack Rock plays an important role at some point?

I think they showed these rocks offshore too.

They shot scenes from Point Break here, including the final fight between Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Except as you can tell from these photos, the waves aren’t nearly as high as in the movie, so they edited in waves from Hawaii.

And then Twilight had some scenes shot here. I guess the vampires went surfing too? It seems like they went for long walks on these beaches, too.

These beaches are in a state park, and you can see why location scouts would choose them for their scenery. They also don’t get a lot of visitors who might have to be kept out of shots. The water is cold, and getting to them can involve a long steep hike down a single path or stair through those cliffs.
And of course getting back up takes a while, which is one of the reasons why you see these warning signs about Tsunami evacuations all over. I’d really hate to be stuck on the beach a long way from the one established way leading to safety.

Another Beach
But not all of the area is so rugged. We stayed near the site where Native Americans once settled, and their presences is commemorated by this statue and stone marker.

The plaque explains that the statues were placed as a sign of welcome for travellers.

And the visitors in present days don’t just include tourists. In the evenings, a herd of elk regularly comes by to feed.

They’re huge beasts, and residents who were hanging out laughed about the people who tried to get too close. No thank you.
And now it’s time to say goodbye and return to regular city walks.
wait….you went to oregon..and lived to tell the tale?
i dont believe you
looks real pretty tho….im a little jealous
This was on a different trail leading out West, but a similar result:
I like how the official listing says “Nearly half of the Donner Party died in these mountains. The rest survived the ordeal with bitter memories of cold, hunger and death.” but then skirts what really happened there.

lol…..i actually know that story
i mean..the description is technically accurate
I guess in a sense the sign is right calling it a “Picnic Ground.”
I can’t believe they call it the Donner Party Picnic Grounds! 😂
Did you ever do the railroad tunnel hike above Donner Lake? It is really cool with tons of amazing art on the tunnel walls.
One of my favorite hikes in the area. I will be there in a week and a half but not sure I will do this hike, maybe too hot. Great shots of Ecola beach, such a great area. Most people that get in trouble there don’t pay attention to the rising tides. You can get trapped on many of those beaches quickly as the tide comes in.
I also did a post on Cannon Beach & Ecola long long ago…
I forgot, but now I see I even replied. Maybe it’s good I went there with zero idea of what it was like due to my fried memory.
Was enjoying the eastern part of the state last weekend. Oregon is a beautiful place.
I bet that was a little warm! Then again, looks like you guys have been getting some serious heat in Idaho too.
It was indeed warm, but with a lake to jump and SUP into, it was tolerable.
Boise, not so much.
Lovely pictures!
Goonies is one of those movies that if you don’t have the nostalgia factor and go to watch it for the first time as an adult, it is not a good movie. 🙂
