Running Climbing Swinging
A few weeks back I took a different route home from the farmers market and walked past a little playground I’d never seen before. It was a warm day and quite a few people were hanging out.
There’s a swing set, but for the most part it didn’t have the usual slides and jungle gyms you see at most playgrounds, and instead someone had trucked in big logs and rocks for kids to climb on.
There were donated toys
Also, a little playhouse.
Unsurprisingly, there’s a little library and a community bulletin board.
And the space is bordered by a mural painted on the back of low building.

I have a friend who is a … I guess you’d call him a “playground contractor.” His firm builds playgrounds for apartment complexes, schools, housing developments, and any other place that might need to have a playground built. Even some private homes.
It’s one of those “industries” that I never thought about until he started working in it. I mean, obviously somebody has to build playgrounds and it’s not necessarily something a regular contractor would have the expertise or the contacts to tackle. They seem to make crazy amounts of money and there don’t seem to be a whole lot of competitors out there.
I’m going to make a guess there are a lot liability issues that scare away contractors.
It’s probably harder than most people think to install a swing set that can stay in place after 10,000 kids have pounded on it.
Yeah, I’ve never asked him but that stands to reason. The equipment is manufactured by other companies, so his company just offers options and then installs them. So I assume the manufacturer would have some liability there. I do know that they mostly use those soft rubber surfaces on the play areas now, instead of wood chips or dirt or something else. So that reduces injuries. I’d imagine they have rules about how tall things can be, too.
