Snow Standouts
The recent snowfall had the nice side effect of making some things stand out that would otherwise fade into the background.
One category is all of the little seed pods and berries that pop once they get contrast from the snow. Some already stand out, like red fruit, and I’m sure the color gets the attention of birds.
Other seeds are pretty dull, and it’s certainly possible birds don’t help spread them. But the snow offers a nice contrast to a person out for a winter walk all the same.
When you’re out for a walk, unexpected changes help you see things in a different way, from the ornamental and planned plants that are carefully placed in their locations, to the weedy and accidental plants that just happen to have found their place in a city.
It is amazing how much snow changes a landscape. I friend and I ran in a state park on Sunday on clear, sometimes muddy, pathways. Two or three weeks prior, it was all we could do to walk in the snow on the same paths. Some of the areas that we walked through were unrecognizable when we returned to run through them.
I forget about running in the snow – too many tripping hazards get hidden until it’s all melted.
I can’t quit it. It’s like being a dog on a fresh snow day.
