Coffee Break [17/8/20]

It can be a struggle to get through the second half of the day.

The Zebra, an insurance comparison company, is offering a unique perk to it’s employees, $300 towards the adoption of a cat or dog. And paid pawternity leave to welcome the new addition into their home.

Pets can help alleviate stress, depression, loneliness and anxiety, as well as encouraging physical exercise. With so many obvious advantages for such a small price this is an idea whose time has come.

Are there any little benefits your employer gives that mean more to you than the dollar value?

        • This reminds me of a funny story. A friend of mine has (or maybe had, we’ve lost touch but only because he moved away, not out of animosity, and I’m not on social media) a father who taught metal shop in high school. He was an ex-Marine and then worked in a machine shop, and then went into teaching.

He was very strict and military drill sergeant-ish and the machine shop students were…let’s say unmotivated and potheads. This was in the 1980s. Early though, or maybe the 1970s.

For the final class project the kids were to design and produce a belt buckle. That would actually be a handy thing to know how to do. I don’t know how the student got away with this without the father/his teacher noticing what he was doing but he created this giant pot leaf belt buckle. Teach was so enraged that he slugged the kid, and the kid was a hulking 18-year-old who went down for the count, much to the astonishment and admiration of the other classmates.

Teach got admonished for this but not really disciplined and certainly not fired. My friend said, “My Dad is right-handed and on that hand he has all his fingers so he used that to throw the punch. Like a lot of shop teachers he’s missing a couple on the other hand.”

    • I love all things Muppet!

I have noticed that cats have a tendency to adopt families. My neighbor has a cat that showed up on their porch and refused to leave. They tried shooing it away, didn’t leave food or water out. It didn’t matter, he decided it was home. They didn’t want the poor thing to starve so eventually he got vet care, a food and water bowl, a little house and a number of toys. He won’t go in the house because he doesn’t like the dogs. So when it’s too hot or cold for his porch house, they have to leave the garage door partially open for him, lol. I sort of wish a porch cat would show up at my place.

  2. My company offers an obscene array of benefits, but there are only a few which I think are actually quite generous like the crazy amount of paid time off we get, or the honest-to-God pension plan.  Other benefits, like the tuition reimbursement program, are actually just bullshit window dressing.  However, at the moment, I’d say the best perk at the moment is the fact that they’ve told non-clinical people like me to work from home indefinitely.  I’m sure we’ll get called back at some point–possibly next summer–but until then it’s nice to know that they’re not jamming us to get back into the office for no other reason than to justify the exorbitant rent they’re paying for all the office space.

  3. Having you work from home is a potentially life saving perk these days, paid time off is great. And real pension plans aren’t necessarily the norm any more. Sounds like you have a decent employer. Are they hiring? Asking for a friend.

    • Actually, my team picked up two new people DURING THE LOCKDOWN.  We did all the interviews, training and certifications online.  The group that I recently left in February is also hiring.  I recommended one of my subordinates for my old management job and she was promoted (this was the person who came up with that great idea several years ago and our Chief ignored her.  The Chief is retiring, so that’s also good news.).  So, they’re looking to fill the role that she has technically vacated, but is still doing along with her new job.  She’s been doing both jobs for five months now and wants someone hired yesterday.
