Coffee Break (19/6/23)

Your midmorning pick-me-up got spiked

Hi friends! It’s Monday and as our Friday afternoon slogan goes… I need a drink. Coffee is good but Double Espresso Vodka is better! I was recently reminded of Van Gogh’s delicious DEV which I used to covet in part due to its scarcity. Back when I drank too much and lived in MTL, the SAQ only imported it in small batches. I have since stopped partying hardy and rarely buy anything stronger than wine or beer. So I’m not sure how Van Gogh’s DEV stands up to the competition. Have you tried it? Do you like coffee/espresso martinis? Are there better brands out there?

It’s also Juneteenth! Here’s a list of Black owned coffee brands you can support with your spending power.

  1. Why yes, I do like coffee/espresso martinis. Also Irish coffee. I’ve not yet tried an espresso and Diet Coke (the drink of the summer???), but am willing to do so. I used to like Death Wish coffee, but it makes my heart beat too fast these days. I like the Blackberry Brandy flavored coffee from local favorite Whiff Roasters. (Although I understand why many folks are pure bean/no flavoring coffee purists.)

    • Wow that’s a creative selection of flavors! I’m both intrigued and repulsed by the buttery soft pretzel coffee. Maybe it’s amazing? Maybe it’s gross like Starbucks’ olive oil coffee?

  2. I’ve tried coffee-booze drinks in the past and generally enjoyed them, but never made a habit of them, and don’t want to make them at home.

I recently started ordering my decaf from Left Coast Coffee Co. after a trip to the Oregon coast. I’ve really enjoyed their Devil’s Lake Decaf roast.

  3. I’m off work today for the holiday and am therefore at loose ends. A couple of buddies are going to meet me at my local pub/microbrewery and we will commence our drinking at 3 pm. You may not hear from me after that.

  4. Thanks for covering the Coffee Break @HammerZeitgeist, I got home last night but was too tired to attempt posting.

I do like a spiked coffee but haven’t tried any of the coffee vodkas. There are several good bourbon creams that pick up now and then for holidays and the occasional afternoon coffee treat. Back in my hard partying days I was known to start the night with an Irish Coffee to give me the caffeine boost to get through the long night. But these days I value my sleep more.

  5. Since this is kind of an Open Thread, can I just chime in and say that I am supposedly working, I usually put in at least 2 or 3 hours a day, sometimes 8 or 10 hours, 7 days a week? Being a freelancer is like being in college. If there’s work and a deadline, you think, “Well, I’ll just do a little more work on the project and turn it in early and get even more work.”

I’m distracted, though, by memories of watching the Coronation and singing “God Save The King.”

Chuck doesn’t seem happy and glorious, and Camilla looks a little worse for the wear herself, but I suppose when you have to wait until you’re in your 70s to finally get a job…even though it was a slimmed down, dumbed down Coronation weekend.

  6. If I’m gonna drink double espresso vodka I might as well just skip straight back to shooting speedballs.  I bet you guys are a load of fun on booze and caffeine though.  I wouldn’t mind being around for that.

    • Double espresso vodka is not worth your sobriety. I haven’t been drunk in years…I actually do wonder if I’m still a fun happy drunk or if age and motherhood has morphed me into a bitter angry one or maybe something in the middle like a sad nostalgic one.

  7. i like my coffee and baileys….and will occasionally go for an irish with whipcream

but thats about as much as im willing to fuck with my coffee

…. surprising really….considering the cheap junk coffee i favour at home

    ….

i do snipe the nice coffee machine at work tho….fuck joining the line for it

  8. I just cracked open the other bag of kona beans I got earlier this year. I don’t drink a lot of coffee, I’m more a tea person. However since ditching soda and diet soda in mid March, my coffee and tea consumption has gone way up!
