Coffee Break [2/12/24]

Everything old is new again. A short-lived cetacean fad of the 1980s has resurfaced. Orcas off the coast of Washington state have been seen wearing salmon as hats.

I don’t look good in hats. How about you, DeadSplinters? Hats, yes or no? And are there any other fashion trends you’d like to see return or any that you hope never do?

  1. I really hope at some point we see the pods that ram yachts start doing the fish hats, too.

Because that sort of cultural transmission is fascinating and orcas are so smart it’s definitely possible.

Then the pods off the Pacific Coast can take out a few yachts for funsies, showing their new fun learned behaviors.

  2. I don’t like wearing hats but they’re a functional necessity in Florida. The sun is merciless and you really have to keep it off you. I usually wear a baseball cap if it’s not too hot, but on seriously scorching days I’ve got one of those fishing hats that provides more coverage. I look stupid but once you’ve had a dermatologist cut stuff off you, you get over the whole “appearance” thing.

I would love to find a brimmed hat that actually doesn’t look stupid when you’re out exercising, but I don’t think one exists.

  3. If I didn’t wear hats I wouldn’t have a nose.  I used to get so blistered, even with sunscreen.

Before Frank Orrall became semi-famous for Poi Dog Pondering, he was in a band we used to go watch all the time at a local club called Hat Makes the Man…

  4. For us Cannuckistanis, a knit hat or toque is a necessity in the winter unless you’re some crazy white guy (and it always is) who prefers to have frostbitten ears.

The only hats I really look stupid in are:

    Cowboy hat

    Montreal Canadiens Hat

    Fedora

    Top Hat

  5. i generally dislike wearing hats and really only do so when i know im going to be outside and unable to find shade for several hours in the middle of summer (aka…trackdays)

i has a fishing hat that only makes me look a little bit like a twat…. i also have a red baseball cap…which was a freebie…. but even here red caps have become somewhat tainted…

winter here doesnt get cold enough for me to bother with hats or gloves….it almost never goes below about 15f…mid 20s are normal

    you know…nippy..not cold cold

    • We don’t get below the twenties here very often. But when I am forced to wear a hat my hair frizzes out when I take it off. And I look like the grandmother from The Addams Family.

      • lol know that feel…..but its not hats what get me there

our typical pre winter just above freezing foggy 90+% humidity weather tho…..

        yeah……thats a frizz maker

also that water cold is brutal….gimme a nice crisp frost anyday

  6. …so…I like hats…& don’t look overly bad in them…but do not generally dress appropriately for the one good one that mostly says safely in a box…that’s a “proper” hat…technically not a fedora but people haven’t cared about the difference since about 1930 or so

…ball caps in various weights/flavors/fabric most of the time…but have a rather fancy (I think, anyway) black beanie striped with reflective white bits that get bright in headlights…that’s somehow also waterproof

…bunch called sealskinz make that…covers ears & the bit of the back of my neck the collar doesn’t & keeps me warm &/or dry this time of year

…so…err…am pro-hats…to the point that I’m low-key miffed there aren’t places to put them in public places these days…or maybe I’d smarten up & break out the good one more often?
