Coffee Break [21/9/20]

It can be a struggle to get through the second half of the day.

One of the few benefits of my anxiety is that I constantly worry about things going wrong, and overcompensate for imagined problems. That comes in handy when punching a time clock. I am rarely ever late.

But sometimes things happen that are beyond our control. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently had to resort to extraordinary measure to avoid being late to the set. When a storm caused a power outage at his home and he was unable to override the electric gate system, The Rock couldn’t wait forty-five minutes for a technician because people were relying on him. So he did what he is uniquely qualified to do and tore the gate off the wall with his bare hands.

Now what are you supposed to tell the boss next time you’re a little behind because you overslept?

  1. …I’m not about to argue with the guy…but I have to admit I’m not sure I’d see that being the quickest way to achieve his stated goal?

…the image looked to me at first glance like the gate got warped in the process but looking closer it seems it’s actually that it’s half a pair of gates with a curved edge…& it looks like it would have been possible to lift it off the hinges given the way those look?

…the gate is lying perpendicular to the post with the hinge pins on so disconnecting the hydraulic section happened at some point & surely if you unbolted that from said post the gate could simply have swung on said hinges?

…then that post could have remained attached to the brickwork, I’d have thought…although I dare say there could be reasons why that isn’t the way they went it seems odd…& also like it would have taken a significant chunk of that 45mins to do it the way they did?

    …or is that just me?

      • …I got that feeling a little, too…although I’d also buy that the way it’s described & the way it actually came off the wall might not match up completely

…it “plays well” for instagram purposes but if he actually tore the thing clean out of the wall single-handed (which I’m pretty sure he could have done given the time) I guess I’d expect it to have taken a bigger toll on that brickwork?

…to be honest I can’t entirely figure out the logic of the thing…it looks more like the bits of iron that attached the hinge pillar to the brick were cut through to release the whole thing from the hinge end…they don’t look like they were twisted/bent/snapped/sheared off…& if the hydraulic stuff were still attached to the gate I could see how doing that might make some sense & probably not take all that long with something like an angle-grinder…but it still looks like there would have been an option to remove the hyraulic arm from where it’s bolted to the hinge-post…& since obviously it was possible to remove it from the gate itself given the image it seems like they could have skipped having to reconnect all the wiring & stuff that got cut along with the welding job to put the hinge-post back?

    • I can’t say about how to MacGyver out of that situation, but I can say you definitely need a battery backup. The Instagram post said something about trying to override the system, so maybe there was a backup that also failed, but that seems like a problem.

One of the reasons I don’t trust electronic locks is that I don’t like the possibility of power loss. I know some have physical keys too, which would be OK, but I’m skeptical of the life and reliability of the electronics.

      • My front door has an electronic lock only. I’ve forgotten the password and can’t find the manual to reset it. Next time I get a new door I’m going with an old fashioned key entry.
