Coffee Break [4/11/24]

I can’t be the only person here struggling with election anxiety. I know polls are bullshit. I know there is more enthusiasm for the Harris/Walz ticket than media wants us to believe. But misogynoir is strong in this country. And there’s voter suppression and the Abandon Harris movement. I’m afraid to get my hopes up.

What, if anything, are you doing to stave off the dread, DeadSplinters?

  1. I’ll be gaming and drinking Tuesday night. I’ll look for election results Wednesday morning. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Apologies for not attending the Zoom call, but my anxiety just won’t let me do that. Soon, though. Soon.

    • I feel the same way. I’ve already told my family and friend that my phone will be on do not disturb. I plan to play a cozy game and try not to obsessively refresh election results. Maybe knock myself out with NyQuil early and wake up to see what happened.

          • I’m looking forward to the zoom, because it means that for *once* in the last… Basically since Patty Wetterling ran against Michele Bachmann (I’ll Google it in a minute), in the 00’s, i *won’t* be allllllll by myself–or those couple years, over on GT, watching the results roll in, and either cheering, or feeling desolate *all* by my lonesome.

I’ve been a political junkie, since I was eight years old.

Paid attention four years *before* that, back in 1080, because of Iran, the hostages, and “The Terrys” because “my Mr. Fritz” was Carter’s VP😉🥰💖

Jesse (and his Rainbow Coalition!) was my *first* choice, as an eight year old, back in 1984–because that was some GOOD shit!!! (Those policies still ARE, too!)

But *then* I discovered that Jesse was only running in the Primaries first–annnnnd he lost!☹️💔…

Although, *then* it became Mr. Fritz and Miz Ferarro–who, being that wee Minnesotan, i was *sure* would win…

I voted for the Email Lady in ’16, hoping *she* would win, and I’d *finally* see a Woman in wat’s arguably the most powerful political position in the World.

I’m *obviously* voting for Kamala & the Gov *this* go-round, and I am totally hoping that the third time’s the charm😉💖💫

  2. I’m unplugging and going for a long, long walk tomorrow night.

If I see fireworks and people cheering I’ll take a look at my phone but otherwise I’ll be off the grid. I already voted so that’s out of the way.

    • I voted on Thursday. Like everywhere else we’ve had higher than normal turnout. I’m trying not to read too much into it one way or another or U’ll drive myself crazy.

      • Faith, Hannibal!💝💖💗

There will *absolutely* be bullshittery & shenanigans pulled by the Right–we *know* that, because they’ve been sayin’ it.

But what hasn’t gotten talked about at ALL, from what I’ve seen in the mainstream media sources, are the Get-out-the-vote efforts, *especially* from The Ivies, and the *REST* of The Divine Nine–and you KNOW they’ve been going ALL OUT, getting folks registered, making sure they’re doing early voting, or promising to go to the polls tomorrow.

        Kamala is a Howard Grad.

        Barack was cool.

        But Kamala’s a Sister. She’s an Ivy.

There is *no* way that the Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha are *not* getting her across that finish line, if at ALL possible😉💖

  3. I’ve been a stressed out mess for weeks and have to keep the remote close at all times to mute any Trump commercials.  My wife is getting tired of me yelling at the TV more than I do when I am watching sports.  I’m going to definitely start self medicating early tomorrow!

    • I’ve tried to keep my expectations low. But in spite of myself I’m hopeful that Kamala is going to win. But even then it won’t be over. We’ll have to listen to the MAGA stolen election bullshit. And there’s the threat of violence. I don’t think there will be an organized effort like last time but I do think there will be some. And I’m just so tired of all the trump humper rhetoric. It’s so discouraging.

      • See that’s where your anxiety is actually better than mine.  I’m expecting a shitload of violence across the country.  These insane motherfuckers have had four years to plan for the failures they encountered the first time around.

        • My stress for the day of is actually a lot lower because my dad is dead for this election. That man lived for the Trump obsessed nutjob content and believed it all. Fucking conservative media would constantly be on TV when I was at their house in prior election years.

In 2020, my dad repeatedly called me and begged me to stay at their house on election night because he was convinced violent bands of antifa, BLM, radical leftists, etc would come out of St Louis city and go after white people in St Louis county. And of course, if I stayed with them he could protect me with all his guns. You know, radical leftist plans to bomb police stations, too. All sorts of psycho rightwing nutjob Purge scenarios they jack off to. Riots! Riots everywhere with looting and hurting the white women!

(And yes I refused to go to their house that night, and of course I never got an apology for the overreacting and fear-mongering.)

Anyways, while this election cycle is still fucking horrible, at least my stress isn’t coming from a family member, too.

        • I’m with Hannibal on this one. I think there will be violence but it’s going to be isolated incidents. That’s not going to help the people who will suffer, though. I think the sensible move is to stay out of public places and let things settle.

The big difference this time is Biden is president. Trump can’t command troops to seize voting machines. He won’t be able to assemble crowds of spittle-flecked MAGA nutjobs. They can’t get close to any seats of government. Doesn’t mean that small groups of maniacs won’t try, but ultimately they’re going to fail.

        • I hope you’re wrong but I won’t rule it out. I think most of them are big mouths who are braver behind a keyboard than in person. I do think there will be the “lone wolves” that show up armed and dangerous. I am afraid that the biggest crazies will be able to do a lot of damage though in a few isolated incidents though.

  4. There is so much more the Dems could have done ad-wise, using Trump’s daily dementia-induced word salad.  If the press wasn’t going to do it, the Dems should have.  This shouldn’t even be close.

    • Honestly I don’t think it would have mattered. I watched a Facebook friend constantly post obvious examples of Trump’s brain being rotten soup on the campaign trail and the Trump people in their family were still disputing it.

    • His fans do not care and his fans include right around ~46% of the electorate. Harris could have promised everyone puppies, blowjobs, money and drugs (pick your 3 favorites) and she still wins at absolute most 51-47 tomorrow night.

It is not the Democrats’ responsibility to make the opposition party less horrifying (though they often seem to think it is.)

    • I’ve seen people reference The Producers suggesting some in the trump camp are trying to throw the election on purpose. I doubt it it but it’s a fun idea. As long as it doesn’t backfire like in the movie.

      • I’ve seen the same comments about The Producers. That the whole thing is a massive grift to pump money into Trump’s pockets. And I do think some of his underlings are directing millions into their own accounts largely because they know he’s going to lose. But I don’t think Trump has the brainpower or strategic skills to execute that plan.

Now there are reports from “sources” that are saying that Trump is despondent because he knows he’s lost. That doesn’t sound like he’s celebrating a successful scam.

        • I agree. He’s surrounded himself with grifters who don’t care if he wins or loses. They’re making money either way. But he cares. His ego can’t accept losing. And I think he’s genuinely afraid he’ll go to jail if he doesn’t win. I don’t think he will. Best case he’ll get some sort of home confinement but I doubt even that.

          • One the one hand, I think there’s a lot out he can still be charged with. On the other hand, I also think his collapse may be a lot worse than the press wants to admit, and there may not be a functional person to charge.

            • Yes, I could see a court insisting on a legitimate cognitive test to determine how bad Trump actually is, and then just ordering him into confinement in a medical facility. If he has to see a real doctor and not one of his MAGA toadies, his deterioration is going to be out there for everyone to see.
