Coffee Break [7/8/23]

Your mid morning pick me up

Fresh produce is worth the cost. And I’ll gladly pay a little more to buy it from my local Farmer’s Markets. The reduced shipping distance is better for the environment. And it supports the regional economy. Now I like a good strawberry as much as the next person, but there is no way in hell I’m paying $350 for one piece of fruit. Even if I could afford it, I can’t imagine spending that kind of money on a single berry. Who am I kidding? If I were in the 1%, of course, I would! But I’d feel really bad about myself.

What’s a ridiculous thing you’d blow money on if you were wealthy, Deadsplinters?

  1. The Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger.

A P-51D Mustang or F-86 Sabre fighter (so I could fly it.)

Pretty damn indulgent, I think. Also risky too as a few privately owned P-51Ds have crashed due structural failure as their components were designed to fly about 100 to 125 flight hours before being the plane is replaced.

    • Those planes are even more indulgent than the car. I personally hate small planes and won’t fly in them anymore. I have several friends who are pilots. But I can see how it would be cool if it was your thing.

  2. At this stage in my life, I would spend/donate 30k per student to my neighborhood public school. Thus leveling the playing field with private schools but maintaining the intersectional diversity of the student body and faculty. That would bring me so much fucking joy.

I would also join the Seattle tennis club which has an outdoor pool. I would have to bribe a member to vouch for me. Then get on their 7 year wait-list for new members which requires a non refundable deposit of 10k or something mind blowing like that! Fuck it, I would just buy the club and open it to the public.

Lol I’m on a philanthropy kick with my imagined wealth.

Oh here’s something self serving that I would love to do, I would only fly first class everywhere for the rest of my life.

    • I’ve flown first class once, when I was bumped up due to overbooking, and it was nice but not a big deal because it was only a short flight.

But for a cross country flight, if I had the money I’d splurge in a heartbeat, and even more to get a nonstop first class seat.

      • Yep, that’s my pick, too. Better service, more room. We were gifted with first class seats on an anniversary trip to Paris, and we still talk about that as part of that trip.

  3. Reading that article, that is a pretty amazing strawberry. 100 grams, as big as a tennis ball  and perfectly sweet. I’m sure it’s like dropping $350 on a few pieces of sushi, which is definitely possible in Japan. You’re paying for something that’s only good for the briefest time. And I’m sure a lot of people are paying it to show they can.

  4. If I had a lot of money, I’d buy a 1930 National Tricone Style 1 Squareneck.

I could almost afford one now, but Dr Mrs Luigi says I already have too many instruments.  So the additional money would go to pay her off.  I’ve thought this through.

  5. if i had too much money i’d probably drop 12 grand on a me powered bicycle

knowing full well i am not a good or fit enough rider to even come close to pushing that bike to its limit…..but thats besides the point…it’ll be my pretty to tinker with…. my precioussss

  6. In the spirit of Manchu & HZ–annnnd because I saw one toodling around Uptown last week, and it reminded me of how much I love them…

An MG Midget–either the MK III, or the 1500, because they’re small, and just FUN looking😁

And after that, something I’d waste money on, would be to get myself a JD, studying/specializing in  SPED & Disability Law, so that I could not only Teach as a licensed ECSE teacher & Parent Educator in schools, but so that I could *also* help families to get the resources in other districts, that their children are entitled to by law…

I’d volunteer with probably Pacer, and help families who need assistance getting through the sometimes horror-show, that can be the US Ed system (and push HARD on Charters which take public dollars, but then DENY kids with SPED needs accommodations!😈😈😈).

And then, if I was still rich after wasting all that money on law school, I’d Shaq it up, and just do random little acts of good, all around, and on the down-low😉

Helping out random folks i run into,, as I’m out & about, and *also* doing plenty of stuff like funding new & accessible playgrounds, where there are old ones; giving out multi-year “grants” for schools & child care centers in low-income areas to buy new books, art supplies, & buy/maintain school-owned musical instruments for kids to use; working with summer camps–so they can give scholarships to more low-income kids, to be able to attend camp, etc.; and I’d also set up a program here in MN, to create a matching-grant, for any community that wanted to start working with Dolly’s Imagination Library–because fundraising in small rural places like where I grew up can be hard, and her program is awesome!
