Coffee Break [9/11/20]

It can be a struggle to get through the second half of the day.

In the tense days leading up to the US Presidential election, we overlooked another important American contest. The Kids Mullet Championship. This year’s winner is eight-year-old Jaxon Crossland of Celest, Texas.

Jax’s lustrous locks earned him $500 and bragging rights. All top 10 contestants can be viewed here. Adults can pre-register now for the 2021 competition.

He’s a cute kid though, and that’s a nice bit of coin for a third-grader. Congrats Jax.

  1. Man, I’m drinking some strong-ass coffee at the moment.  I have miscounted the scoops when I made it this morning.  I may have to make the next cup a little Irish just to keep me from blasting off.

    • I usually make mine very strong but when my daughter was here last week she said it was undrinkable, so I’ve been trying to cut it back, a little. But now that I know I can use the strength as an excuse to “make it Irish”, I might go back. 😈

  2. I grilled Impossible Burgers yesterday for the first time, and they’re solid.

The family verdict was if they hadn’t been told, they wouldn’t have noticed. They are on a par with regular ground beef burgers in my opinion, but not up there with the best grilled ground steak burgers I’ve ever had. I did not notice anything off about them, though, and I have not been a fan of other substitute burgers and hot dogs I’ve had in the past.

They were about twice the price of regular ground beef, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the price drops as they ramp up production.

    • I’m still waiting for the long-term health effects to be revealed in about 10-15 years.  There’s no telling what something so heavily processed is doing to one’s body and I’m not a big risk taker.  If the peer-reviewed research determines at that point that this stuff is basically fine, then I’ll be on board.

      • I think the big issues are they’re high in fat and salt, and what we already know about those things is enough to say they shouldn’t be eaten often, just like ground beef burgers, which are definitely not good for you.

But as a sub for ground beef on other fronts, like the environment, there are definitely advantages. The amount of energy, carbon, cropland and water going into a pound of beef is pretty shocking. But probably the best thing is not eating burgers at all, regardless of the kind.

        • …which is why I’m so grateful to all the vegetarians & vegans out there since the days of pythagoras for offsetting my inability to give up the good stuff…like steak

…if I have to accept being morally inferior to keep eating meat, I guess that’s a trade I’m prepared to make…if only because if I tried to be vegetarian I’m pretty sure I’d starve to death…sports aren’t the only thing I’m kind of a heathen about?
