Coffee Break [9/5/22]

There will be no discussion of tea today — I forbid it

The pad of paper in the featured photo really got my attention. Working as a writer/editor, one of the things I like to do when I have a cup of coffee is write. Nothing very creative, more like a brain dump of lists or tasks, plus maybe a doodle. If I’m in a public place, I might write down an overheard snippet of conversation. I’m also very prone to just staring out the window while enjoying a cup.

Funny enough, I rarely look at my phone while drinking coffee — my brain just thinks that’s pointless, for reasons I really don’t understand. Same with reading — maybe I don’t want to be distracted from my beverage?

So what are your favorite activities while enjoying that cup of hot bean juice?

Indeed.

If you don’t drink coffee, substitute whatever beverage stands in for coffee in your life.

  1. Doomscrolling while I drink of that which is forbidden to discuss.

  2. Coffee after work on Friday with some Irish creme and 1/2 & 1/2. That way I’m awake past 6:30 when I hit the couch. Saturday and Sunday mornings with the NY Times. As an aside, I think I heard blue dog’s head explode.😉😉

  3. …I think at this point it’s no secret that at least some of the coffee I drink is paired with sifting through headlines in an arguably excessive sort of a way…but I do drink coffee other times, too…sometimes even when doing nothing in particular

…I think it’s also safe to say some coffee deserves to be savored…& some begs for distraction?

  4. Well then, here is a divisive coffee subject: flavored or straight? My favorite coffee is blackberry brandy roast…but I drink all coffee (except decaf) in all forms every day, while working, cooking, doing chores, etc. DeadSplinterites, are you straight bean or flavored bean folks?

    • I love Panera’s hazelnut coffee but that’s the only one I like enough to seek out.

    • Straight black, but I am not a coffee connoisseur.

    • I buy unflavored dark roast just so i can adulterate it with flavored creamers.

  5. Catching up on all my favorite websites with my coffee.  Lately it has been trying to figure out what the fuck to do with my Hawaii trip I should be on in about an hour.  My daughter tested positive for Covid a few days ago & has a bad cold from it and we are supposed to be on a flight to Hawaii in about an hour.  Can’t really go to see my 96 year old mother and give her Covid instead of a lei & a hug.  Once the masks and restrictions came off the travel companies are pretty much, fuck you if you have Covid, travel or lose your money.   Yeah, it is a fucking Monday I need lots of coffee!

    • Ugh I’m sorry that sucks.

I was on flights this weekend and I was one of very few people wearing masks.

It was definitely a free for all. You’re right to be worried about grandma!

      • The fact that most people chose not to wear masks on your flight is why we need government mandates. The majority of people are so fucking dumb/selfish.

        • It was nerve wracking.

We went to see a show (a Joan Rivers impersonator lol) on Friday night and they checked everyone’s vax status at the door, which was somewhat comforting.

          But the flights were UGH

  6. I love a sip-and-do-nothing coffee. But more likely with my first cup, I’m checking out the news or making breakfast or school lunch for my son, which are both considerably less serene and enjoyable than doing nothing.

  7. i love standing outside with my morning coffee and morning cigarette…usually just wearing my boxers

    wakes me right up

(and at 5 am im not really likely to see or be seen by many)

  8. Thanks for covering the Coffee Break. I’m low on coffee today. I normally read Deadsplinter with my morning coffee and have my afternoon coffee and the patio with my dog. We’re off for a walk around the lake now, then dinner.

  9. Eta, and i forgot to say–reading (either on my phone, or a book) while drinking it!

No coffee here-i’m the weirdo who needs 2-3 sugar packets to make even a Caribou turtle mocha or Mint-chocolate mocha palatable & not excessively bitter….

Loooooove the scent of coffee, but haaaaaate the bitterness (Swedish Egg Coffee at Church breakfasts or Suppers, with 2-3 sugars per 8 oz. was the other one I grew up with that’s also  “less bitter” enough for drinking)

Chai/Chai Lattes (iced in the warm months), are my preferred “coffee-style” drink, and a can of Black-label Mountain Dew (Mountain Dew Zero Sugar) is my daily preferred poison caffeine source.

Grew up with a Mountain Dew habit from the age of 16-or-so, until I was 38, and had my pancreas surgery… after I became diabetic, I had to pretty much give it up, because it spiked me too high, and Diet Dew is terrible flavor-wise….

But 3-or-so years ago, they came out with the Black Label,** and I’ve been able to have my old caffeine source again😉😁

**fair warning: Black Label apparently does taste terrible if you’re used to the  regular or cane-sugar versions of Dew!!!

You need to not drink any of the sugared versions for 1-3 weeks before attempting to try the Zero Sugar version, or it WILL taste awful–a former co-worker and I figured that out, because she is a “Regular” dew drinker, and tried the sugar-free version a few times, before figuring out the week-between-versions part.
