As I’m sure everyone knows by now, I’m not big on “new” music, per se. But, every once in a while something pops up. This time it’s the new Samantha Fish album.
There’s probably too much to include here, especially as I’m rummaging through a backlog of 2021 releases to get an idea of year-end recommendations and favourites.
This is this artist’s second album of 2021 (the first is Pray For Haiti). Both are great and would probably make my top 20 of 2021, but this one slightly edges out the first, because while I appreciated the variety, willingness to take risks, and clever array of samples (from the “Thriller” video, for instance) on PFH, second album Balens Cho possesses a greater finesse and assurance. But by all means, listen to both.
Mach-Hommy, “LAJAN SAL” from Balens Cho
And then this one is part of a massively deep and fertile rabbit-hole of present-day indie pop throwback bands I recent went down. This is lovely, peppy-yet-melancholic, throwback ’80s/’90s jangle pop that goes between twee and shoegaze-y, the Pastels and the Stone Roses, in equal measure. There’s more where this came from.
