Our wedding anniversary is coming up. Don’t ask me the number – I’m not allowed to tell you, because then you would be able to back into my wife’s age (which she does not look by the way). But rest assured, it is a very large number.
Forget about the vast majority of people who knew me back when that would have bet good money that I wouldn’t live past 30. You couldn’t find anyone who would have believed I’d be married this long. But here we are. I’ve told the story before about how my wife and I met, at a bus stop in Chicago, and it’s a romantic story but I’m not going to tell it again. Since then, we’ve moved coast to coast to coast to coast a couple times before landing here in Virginia, and each stop led us to some personal treasure.
And I am not that easy to get along with, let me tell you. I mean, I try but I’ve got my ways. Somehow, it has worked. Maybe it’s like my grandmother said to me long ago, “For every funny foot there’s a funny shoe”, but still I’m a misshapen hairy orc’s foot and she’s a sexy open-toed Louboutin pump.
So these songs are for an audience of one. I hope you don’t mind. You can post songs about the things that have lasted (or didn’t last) for you. Thanks for being here and all that.
When Mrs. Butcher and I celebrated our 19th Anniversary this year, I told her the only things I’ve done for longer than be married to her are stay sober and breathe. I’ve not been able to stick with literally anything else.
This is the song that was played for our dance at the reception. Keb’ Mo’ – I’m Telling You Now.
One year for my wife’s birthday I got my daughters to make a video for her. It was a mix a slideshow of old pictures mixed with us performing this song. I played uke, the youngest played the violin, & the eldest played flute. I got my pro drummer friend to lay down the drum track. It came out pretty good. I think most people didn’t think we were really performing it when they watched the video.
Our song at our wedding.
Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
We got together before the advent of widespread electrification (candles: so romantic) so one of our songs was (and note the New York streets of the period):
Because it’s important to maintain fictions in every relationship in order to maintain domestic harmony, for a good year around the time we first got together I had to pretend to enjoy this song, which I detested from the first time I heard the opening note:
Wait a second, did it involve an umbrella?
Here you go @Luigi-Vuoto, a newer, super romantic song, One Life by Dermot Kennedy, “One life is never long enough for us.”
Screaming Trees – Forever
Congratulations on your 12th Anniversary,** Luigi!!!
It’s COMPLETELY understandable, that Mrs. Vuoto is feeling uncomfortable with the idea of leaving her 20’s–but let her know that all of us girls over here on DS can assure her, her 30’s will be even BETTER than her teens & 20’s were!😉😁💖
As for songs, a ‘Jovi ballad that I’ve loved for decades now;
And for Enduring, it’s gotta be these–ones I’ve loved since childhood–Elvira was the *unofficial* “Uncles & Nieces and Dads & Daughters” song at MOST of my cousins’ weddings–which started because it was one so many of my cousins & I would dance to, as young kids, in the living room at the house of our Auntie & Uncle😉😁
And then there are these two, which I adored (and still do!), because of growing up with a family who sang in the Church Choir,*** and harmonizing with each other, all the time;
Those low notes in the Statler Brothers song (and the “giddy-up, ba-oom, boppa-oom, boppa-mow-mow” ones Richard Sterban hits in Elvira were ones that the guys in our family could HIT, so these were songs I’ve adored since I was tiny)
Last one is this, since this month was the 47th anniversary of that night;
**I work with pre-K’ers, and they think the 12th graders are *so big,* so Obviously this has to be your & Mrs. Visit 12th (or *some* anniversary of that 12th!🤗💝)
***looking through stuff last winter & spring, as I was packing up Dad’s apartment, I found an old book which had pictures of the membership at my childhood church. The picture of the church choir absolutely cracked me up, because out of the 7 members, 5 were family members of mine😉😄😂🤣💖
That was supposed to be this one, and the *second* version of the Statler Brothers song!😖🤪
Forever and ever and ever and ever…
