Deadsplinter How To: Terminology

As you are clicking around here at DS you might come across certain acronyms or abbreviations you’re unfamiliar with. Hopefully this helps…

First up is the DOT or the Daily Open Thread. Every morning at 6am EST the DOT publishes. At first glance, it appears to be an endless stream of WaPo links with a few songs or cartoons at the end and a bunch of text in between, at least when @splinterrip, who is responsible for the DOTs, writes them, but if you pay attention to the links and the text and the cartoons/songs, they’re definitely worthy of your time.

Quick definition break: ATL or Above The Line means above the imaginary line between the post and the comment section. So ATL is the post. BTL or Below The Line means below the imaginary line between the post and the comment section. So BTL is the comment section.

The intention of the DOT is the open thread bit, of course, but also for anyone to graciously update the rest of us on any news or something funny or CAT GIFS????? throughout the day. Someone will always pay attention to the DOT so even if a number of posts have posted since the DOT was posted, it’s still the place to drop anything you want BTL. If we have time or are able throughout the day we might be able to hoist some of those contributions ATL, or even turn them into their own little evening posts to discuss after the DUAN or while we’re still playing around on the DUAN.

If you’d like to host the DOT sometime perhaps in your own style (perhaps even in the style of those on a soon-to-be-greatly-missed-Kinja-sub-blog) send a pm to @splinterrip.

Next up is the DUAN pronounced d-juan (not dwayne or do-an) or Deadsplinter Up! All Night where we all get together and share songs every evening at 5pm EST. Each DUAN has a theme that you can follow or completely ignore. As one once said to me “whatever moves you is cool.”

The DUANs are hosted by our group of DUAN Discographers and if you’d like to host your very own DUAN send a PM to @keitelblacksmith, who swears up and down it is pronounced kettle but we all call them kai-telle. At least I do, when no one is looking.

The NOT or Nightly Open Thread (7pm EST) has been brought back to perhaps a @brightersideoflife than those published long ago so we can play around on the DUAN and do some light bantering at the same time.

FYCE or Food You Can Eat is a fantastic collection of recipe posts. With my lack-of-animal-products-diet I can’t eat any of the food, but I sure can enjoy the posts because they are often full of education or humour or both.

FYCE has a lot of excellent contributors. If you’d like to show us the food you like to prepare in your very own FYCE post, send a pm to @elliecoo.

There will probably be more acronyms in the future, because why type entire words when an initial will do?

  1. Thanks for this. Even though someone explained what the letters meant to me over on GT (may she rest) I felt like I was kinda missing the point? A lot of people only talk about the links in the DOT so I questioned if it was really an OT.
And DUAN just confused me. Maybe bc I was never on Deadspin.
