Do you have a favorite artist that was putting out cool music long before you ever heard of them? Maybe it was solo work before they joined a band or they needed to change bands to get on your radar? I never knew much about Vince Guaraldi before Charlie Brown, I just knew I loved his piano playing. Then I got into Latin jazz and picked up some Cal Tjader & Mongo Santamaria stuff and found out he was in those bands. Holy crap, I was hooked. Vince’s piano part starting about 3:30 is insane!
and on the completely other end of the spectrum…I was always a Clash fan but didn’t learn until much later about Joe Strummer’s earlier band the 101ers and it was love at first listen…
Give me your before they were famous stuff or anything you feel like posting, I’m not picky. Hope you are all holding up out there, the weekend is in sight!
oh….i do not…i mean…i probably do
but i dont even know if half the people ive heard of are famous…much less what they did before….im pretty agressive in my dont wanna know shit about people stance
so ill just go with something that blipped my radar recently
That header shot of Guaraldi looks like the piano-player version of Bun E. Carlos.
I was never into The Stranglers, but found myself listening to Hugh Cornwell at some point and enjoying his stuff:
That subsequently led me to go listen to The Stranglers again, both with and without Cornwell. Gotta say I found a lot to like this time.
I had that same thought. I wonder if Bun was a fan or subconsciously channeled his Vince?
I’ve mentioned before that I listened to a lot of R & B and funk as a kid, loved James Brown
Superbad
but I had no idea that I was listening to Bootsy Collins, who I became a huge fan of when he was with P-Funk and later on his own.
I’d Rather Be With You
Worth re-telling: In 1992 I saw Tool open for Henry Rollins in a club that held about 700 people:
Saw Pearl Jam in the same club right around the same time, supporting the “Ten” LP before anybody had really heard it:
I didn’t hear of Dinah Washington or Clifford Brown or the Pied Pipers until they were all gone, so I guess that fits the bill.
Pre Eurythmics Lennox and Stewart
The Tourists
I saw Queen as the opening act for Mott the Hoople.
They were far less well known than Mott.
I saw that tour. Me and my buddies were just coming in when Queen was playing “Keep Yourself Alive”. We looked at each other like, “Holy shit”.
Before he was Stevie Ray Vaughan, he was Little Stevie who played guitar in an Austin club band called Paul Ray and the Cobras.
Thunderbird is a rare example of SRV actually singing in the band.
