Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Cat Scratch Fever

Sometimes you feel the need to scratch that itch. For me, that’s sometimes figuratively literal because I often have an itch for the scratch. If the manipulation of records spinning isn’t really your bag, perhaps there’s some tune you don’t exactly rate on its merits but go back to because of one particular element that’s superb, or even sublime?

So what scratches your itch, Deadsplinter?

…scratching from these cats:

Skratch Bastid:

Check out the LEGEND that is DJ Jazzy Jeff and Skratch Bastid performing at a Toronto Raptors’ halftime show:

Skratch Bastid was nominated for the producer of the year Juno award for his work on Buck 65’s album, “Situation” released by Sage Francis’ Strange Famous label in 2007.

Buck 65 is a reputable DJ in his own right:

Nefarius:

Underrated is their album, “Tough Dumplin’ (Foundation for Better Beats)” which is one of my favourite albums to listen to for the scratching alone. This is one of my go-to tracks:

Outkast:

The album “ATLiens” has some serious scratching that is worth another listen for those who mistakenly failed to listen beyond Andre 3000’s flow and lyrics:

Lastly, for those who are not fans of actual art and for those who are:

Handsome Boy Modeling School (which is art):

Thank you for your continued support of Deadsplinter. A place that exists because we have prescriptions that need filling, it seems.

  1. This is a fun version of Killing in the Name by the Israeli band The Apples, with scratching and mighty fine horns.

but I’ve been grooving to some cowpunk today! Nine Pound Hammer – Zebra Lounge

  2. I like a lot of Robert Palmer’s early stuff. The album Clues is an all time classic, and Johnny and Mary will always one of my favorite songs ever. Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley is great. Every Kinda People is another terrific song. But, I never could stand his huge mid-80’s hits for some reason. Except the “She’s so fine there’s no tellin’ where the money went” line in Simply Irresistible. That one line sounds like vintage Robert Palmer and it’s the lifeline I cling to whenever this song comes on in my vicinity. I’ve always wondered what he was talking about with that line, too. What money? What did she spend it on?

  3. This is my guilty pleasure song: The Wallflowers – One Headlight

Two things about this song that always grab me:

    1. The recording is immaculate. Listen to this thing under a good set of headphones and you’ll hear what I mean.
    2. The line, “man, I ain’t changed, but I know I ain’t the same”. Gives me chills every time.

  4. I didn’t think everyone would enjoy the scratching so I wanted to add a bit that would allow people to post things in songs that stand out to them…the ones I first thought of:

    The bassline:

    The drums:

    The guitar:

    and obviously…the cowbell:
