Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Darn He’s Dead

Good evening! Mrs. Blacksmith here for my first DUAN kick-off post!

I really like new music by new artists – I like to support them by buying their albums or attending their shows. Mostly, I am just blown away by the bravery it takes to say, “The heck with the 9-5, I’m a musician”, and then to go for it. And I know it is a hard life – one of the kids we saw when the band was in high school (I’d posted them earlier this week) just added to their Instagram saying they were touring England but were dead broke – if anyone could buy them a beer they would appreciate it.

Anyway, I also like old music, and many of you great people on DUAN remind of great songs I’ve not listened to lately, or stuff I’ve missed entirely.

Now and then I’ll go down the Spotify rabbit hole of “Fans also liked”, and yesterday I hit a winner. A new guy with an old guy (who was new to me). I was quite sad to learn the older fellow had died in 2009.

But anyway, here is my new jam, Glory Box by The Avener and John Martyn:

  1. Very nice, Mrs. Blacksmith and I hope you will host more often!

In 2007, Eric Clapton took Derek Trucks with him on his world-wide tour.

What a thrill it must have been for the young man who was named after Derek and the Dominos.

  2. Glad to have you hosting! My favorite part of DUAN is discovering new bands or new to me bands & your husband was always a great source of me finding new bands and spending a stupid amount of time going down some rabbit hole! My buddy in Portland turned me onto this band that I don’t know how I never heard of before but I hadn’t. I’m not sure if it is her voice, the fun beats, lyrics or what but I have been grooving on it for the last few weeks. This tune starts at 1:00 in:

  3. Thank you for sharing, I think that track’s fantastic. Somehow I ended up finding this cover band on YouTube and am now enamored by every track involving Sophia Urista or Amanda Brown on vocals:

For my particular age demographic and musical taste, it’s unbelievable to find such a band which is covering some iconic stuff (Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers) with the fresh take of their brass section arrangements. It excites me to no end and I wanted to pass it along.

    • …I have a friend for whom “it’d be better with a brass section” is pretty much an article of faith so I thank you for that on more than merely my own behalf

  4. Yay Mrs. Blacksmith! Happy weekend! Does everyone know my friends KC Clifford and Carrie Elkin? Carrie and I played soccer together in HS and I met KC years ago in Baltimore.

    • One of my favorite mashup examples! The visuals look like Taylor Swift’s leaving a dude because she can’t deal with his physical disfigurement.

If you like that, might I interest you in a mashup involving DMX?

  5. Great duan Mrs. B.
I’ve got something old and new.
It’s hard to believe that Kim Gordon only released her first solo record in October of last year. She still kicks ass.
    Murdered Out

  6. …I know I’ve posted this one before (although I can’t rightly recall if it was in a DUAN thread) but if “darn, he’s dead” is the order of the day this is hands down the first place my mind went

    …closely followed by this

    • Goddamn, both of those hit hard–I’m going to need to hang onto those.

Since we’re doing some spoken word, here’s one of my perpetual favorites, though it is decidedly less serious:

Apologies for the low quality, but the clip is at least 15 years old, I’m sure.

  7. I bought a cd from this guy who I saw selling his first ep and performing at a skytrain station in Vancouver, BC. Half a decade or so later, he recorded and released a song that only made it big when a bunch of inferior (imo) artists ruined it and made it famous…I’m not playing that song, though (not even the real/GOOD version of it).

Here is the dusty foot philosopher…Strugglin’ by K’Naan:

  8. …I know I posted both those tunes at least once before splinterrip.kinja.com became a bunch of numbers so maybe it was your more recent post I was thinking of…but it’s equally possible I’m just that unimaginative &/or over-fond of your man Sage, there?

  9. came across this the other day…its uhh..a thing..definitely a thing

i like it..but then musically this isnt all that far out of my comfort zone..and im not in the most mellow of moods courtesy of insomnia..better part of the week to go till the doctor will see me about that…i swear if he tells me quit smoking im beating him to death with his model skeleton
