Welcome! Tonight’s Friday DUAN is all about demo recordings & unpolished music. It’s always fun to hear the original versions of songs from your favorite artists before they recorded them in the studio.
Share some of your favorite demos or early unpolished recordings.
Thanks for supporting DUAN and Deadsplinter!
what can i say….i love blind guardian
heres what they eventually became
(i mostly left that coz i wanted to… and coz i think it has to rank amongst the best powermetal songs ever)
The Killers – Mr Brightside
I love this song but I’m glad they cleaned this up and removed the intake of breath.
Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure (Home Demo)
Maximo Park – Graffiti
Michael Jackson
Here’s an entire record of demo tapes. [Backstory, Harvey originally worked with Steve Albini on most of these tracks for Rid of Me. She later released her self-produced demos of eight tracks from that album, plus six demos from other projects–allegedly because although Albini’s versions were great and critically praised, the production was heavy-handed. Both are great, fwiw.]
PJ Harvey, “Rid Of Me” (4-Track Demo Version)
And here’s a demo tape from Jay-Z. Click through to see the embedded player.

Polly Jean Harvey is goddamned amazing
Nebraska is basically a bunch of demo tracks
Ever since I first heard this particular demo of his, I’ve been a bit more partial to it rather than the finished product:
Bruce Springsteen — “Born in the U.S.A. (Demo Version – 1982)”
The Clash — “Working and Waiting” (demo of “Clampdown”)
