We’re in that twilight period between December 25 and January 1 that I like to call the “Holiday Taint” (because it tain’t Xmas, and it tain’t New Years and it tain’t good for nothing). We’ve had our Saturnalia fill of seasonal cookies and cocktails and goose fat. We’ve written all those gastronomic checks that our digestive systems will never cash. And yet it’s no time to take our foot off the celebratory accelerator because we’re about to put a spike in the zombie year of 2020 and by god it’s going to be so satisfying. This is when we demonstrate our true mettle, because it’s so hard to care and yet we persist because that’s what we do. Because that’s who we are, goddammit.
So let’s show this cursed year what we’re made of and listen to whatever pleases us at this moment. Let’s reject such limiting social constructs as “theme” and simply post whatever tickles our not inconsiderable fancies. Be all you can be, musically. And definitely show a little gratitude that at least most of us are actually gonna see 2021.
Me? My wife is back home and I’m feeling pretty damn good. She even said something about how clean I kept the house while she was gone, which is pretty remarkable. I’m something of an odd duck and I get a little, um, disconnected when I’m on my own for long stretches. So it’s good to have a little more certainty in my existence again. I have not become a ghost, I am visible to someone. Here is a live stream from our house right now:
And lord, there is so much wonderful music in the world. New music, old music. Even some great music that has not yet been used to death in TV commercials for fast food or as radio talk-show bumper music or over the closing credits of some superhero movie. For example, I love this new album from Horse Lords. I mean, it makes me so happy.
Since my wife is probably going to see this, I’m going to post something just for her.
So all I’m asking is that you share what you like. No theme. No gods, no masters. Be not afraid. There will be no judgement tonight, only the true spirit of the motto that I now have tattooed on my neck, “THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING DEADSPLINTER AND DUAN”.
Love one another.
Welcome home Ms. Luigo Vuoto!
OK Go – Do What You Want
This song is my ultimate chill, you need to calm down song…
and one for another covid loss, a Hui Hou Mary Ann!
I have some Gilligan’s Island trivia. If you look really closely at this intro sequence, at about :18, you’ll see a flag at half-mast. It’s because the scene was filmed shortly after Kennedy’s assassination:
Oh, there it is, or at least in the image I’m seeing. It’s in the background, at the top, toward the right.
My favorite bit of 60s rerun anomolies are the palm trees sneaking into the corners of scenes of Stalag 13 due to Hogan’s Heroes being shot in Southern California.
My mother was a big fan of “The Scarecrow and Mrs. King” and they did some exterior shots in DC but they had to go to Northern Virginia for reasons I forget. Palm-tree lined boulevards. They couldn’t have cared less.
That opening scene is pulling out of Ala Wai harbor & u can see my sister’s exboyfriend’s sailboat in the background. He lived on it for years. The actual scenes of the island from a distance is Coconut Island in the bay near where my dad was stationed. It is a marine research facility.
I just read about Dawn Wells. Covid takes another one.
Fuck.
“Weird Al” Yankovic – “Isle Thing”

Funnily enough, I seem to remember many years ago seeing a show ad for a year-end comedy show called “Holi-taint” hosted by (I think?) a pre-Baby Cobra Ali Wong.
Here’s to many better tomorrows:
The Beatles, “Tomorrow Never Knows”
This also somehow got stuck in my head:
Counting Crows, “Long December”
