Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Done Laid Around

I definitely feel like I done laid around too long at this point. Everyone have a good Memorial Day weekend? Did it actually feel like Memorial Day weekend for anybody?

That’s Harry Belafonte singing Gotta Travel On in the 1959 film The World, The Flesh, and The Devil. In it, Harry is the last man on Earth after a nuclear holocaust. He lives alone in New York until he runs across pretty (and white) Inger Stevens. He can’t bring himself to fall in love with her (“people will talk”) and then things get even more complicated when bigoted Mel Ferrer shows up. Certainly dated at this point, but it’s definitely one of the most interesting “social message” movies from that era. They shot a bunch of scenes in the early morning hours on deserted Manhattan streets that are pretty fantastic to see.

  1. I’ve been listening to a lot of ambient and psychedelic stuff, I feel like I’m on a slightly different wavelength than everyone else. So, here’s a second one that may fit the theme better?
