Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Fashion Sense

I hold by sable, drab and grey; I do not wish to be a popinjay

I'm bringing a film crew with me to document my trip to Chicago.

I’m trying to come up with my wardrobe for my trip to Chicago. Time to scrape the sheep shit off my muck boots, trade them for Ferragamo loafers, and put together a look so I’ll fit in up there in the big city. Replace the overalls and Carhartt with Balenciaga and Borsalino. I don’t have a clue what people are wearing these days, but the wife says I can’t go wrong with this classic look.

[Content Warning: A few of these songs, especially the last two are dangerously catchy and may cause ear worms and/or you walking around the house like a moron singing them at the top of your lungs and upsetting everyone around you until they finally give up and start singing them too.]

    just remember…

    • Too chilly for my hot pants, but I’m ready with the ass-less chaps.

      • I was once at an underwear party (these used to be a very popular thing, pre-Grindr) and a guy got kicked out for wearing assless chaps. Jock straps were OK, and of course all kinds of sexy undies, but not assless chaps for some reason. Read the fine print on your invitation.

  3. Before there was Madonna rippng off ballroom culture with “Vogue,” there was the incredibly creative and chameleon-like David Bowie:

I actually have a Chicago fashion story. When I was in my early 20s, this was just before Mrs. O’Leary’s cow started the Great Fire, I used to go to Chicago quite a bit because a good friend of mine lived there. I loved it. I almost moved there. But I always went in summer and complained about the 100° heat and 100+ % humidity. I was invited to a party and got talking to these two women who worked on commission at a very upscale department store, I think Neiman Marcus. They told me that the winters were far worse. What they did was pack their work ensembles in a bag and then pretty much wear every article of clothing they owned, because they were on an outdoor, elevated, unheated subway line.

“It’s not that bad,” one of them said to me, with the other nodding along. “We look so crazy even the other crazies are afraid to approach us.” I wonder what happened to them. I can imagine. Good marriages, large houses in desirable North Shore suburbs, just a tinge of Homeowner Association Fascism, restricted neighborhoods maybe but those are tough to pull off nowadays.

  4. For non Canadians, it’s the theme from Fashion TV, a weekly TV show on… Fashion.
