Suraphol Sombatcharoen was the King of Luk Thung. Also called Thai Country Music, like country music here, it’s probably the most popular genre in Thailand. When I was there, you couldn’t go to any shopping center without hearing it blaring from a stand selling cd’s of the stuff. It’s quite enchanting music, and I couldn’t resist buying a few. I don’t know too much about Suraphol except that, sadly, he was murdered, apparently by a “jealous husband,” after a concert in 1968. Crazy.

We have some Cambodian friends who like similar song stylings. Here is a song from the album Fear Fun, Father John Misty, You Can Do It Without Me.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “legalize LSD” shirt before.
We saw him live in a smallish venue right after this album was released, so maybe in the fall of 2012? He put on a great show. Put the thing I remember most is that the man can lean his body backwards in a long arc and stay upright. Another song of his features his ayahuasca experiences.

I’ve learned a lot of new artists here but tonight DUAN has introduced me to a whole new genre of music.
I can’t remember if someone posted this on here recently or if I heard it on our local college station in the last several days. Sorry if I’m repeating someone’s pick.
Channel 3 – Fear of Life
