Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Gonna find me, a hole in the wall. I’m gonna crawl inside and die.

Toy Caldwell served two tours in Vietnam as a Marine, and he received the Purple Heart for injuries he received.
When he returned home, he started a band with his brother, Tommy.
Toy and Tommy rented an old warehouse to rehearse in, and when the landlord gave them the keys, the name of the last tenant was still inscribed into the keys. The name was Marshall Tucker, who was a blind piano tuner in the area. And so, Marshall Tucker was born.
Toy was nicknamed “The Thumb”, as he used his thumb to play his Les Paul instead of a pick.
In the clip that I have posted, you can see Jimmy Hall of the band Wet Willie shouting out at about :12.
Toy died at 45 of cardiac arrest.
Although many petitions have been circulated over the years, these pioneers of Southern Rock are sadly still not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  1. In a place you only dream of where your soul is always free . . .
    Our souls are the only free thing about where I live. Here’s wishing you freedom.

    • I love The Outlaws but they needed about five more guitars 🎸

    • A friend of mine was their road manager in the 70’s.

        • Nothing specific, just that they partied hard. And I know he did. He lost his job with them when he went to jail on drug charges. But he knew he screwed up and they remained friendly.

  2. Wait, what!? Marshall Tucker isn’t in the HOF?!! That’s a fucking crime.

    Gonna find me a Black Hole Sun

    In The Wall of Denial

    Gonna crawl inside and Jack, You’re Dead

    Mm, mm, mm, don’t he look natural?

  3. that was a really nice song by a band i’d never heard of…thanks for that:) ill try to come back and find something to go with the theme a little later…. but first i gotta miss it completely

    today 183 radio stations all across europe played this song at the same time (9:15am for me) as a show of solidarity

    i thought that was pretty cool
    ……
    who’s cutting onions round here?

  4. As much of a music snob as I can be I never got hung up on genres. Good music is good music. The 70’s Southern Rock bands were generally scorned by the punks, but were a big influence on the alt country acts of the 80’s. Like these guys

  5. okay…its a lil later now…. so i’ll go for the theme now… you kinda stumped me on the theme tho… southern rock aint really my field..i know and like most of the big hits..but thats about all i know as well…
    so heres a cover

    • oo wait wait.. i just remembered another cover i really like
      wait… does presley count as southern rock?
      ah fuckit

      better to ask forgiveness than permission right?
      ill be good now
      (i do love 21 pilots tho…oddball band… right up my alley)

      • Elvis Presley absolutely counts as Southern Rock, IMHO.

    • I like Brent Smith a lot, but I’ve never understood how he could so badly oversing a song called “Simple Man.” I mean, it’s right there in the freaking title.

      • im guessing brent smith is the singer… as a rule..i love the music and dont know shit about the artist
        but i figured he was channeling his inner *googles* fogerty

        dude should probably take up smoking :p

    • oh thats nice
      thank you 🙂

    • I like that, yes indeed. I love it when DUAN turns me on to something new. Thank you,
      KeitelBlacksmith.

  6. This one is for Luigi, my favorite non-Hawaiian steel guitar player Speedy West w/ the first southern guitar hero, Jimmy Bryant.

  7. …so I know it’s kind of low hanging fruit…but it seemed appropriate?

    …as, increasingly, this is starting to sound

    …admittedly that isn’t exactly their most souhtern rock-ish effort…but them hills are looking pretty good to me, I’ll admit

  8. anyhooo……im going to bed…and coz i cant help meself im leaving yous with a parting present wich i hope will be new to some of you at least

    but has nothing to do with nothing

    • goodmorning!
      its half past nine and ive already had 35 cups of coffee

      (i think this is why the missus wants to strangle me sometimes)
      anyhoo……. i needed to share something….coffee jitters…sorry

  9. I’m not good with Southern Rock bands but Chuck Ragan is from Gainseville so close enough.

  10. The Gambler broke even last night, so (along with Big Fitz💖), in honor of Kenny, the songs that the very Wee Emm used to ask to be played, any time this then two-year old was near a jukebox:

    And *not* Kenny, but Outlaw Country;

    The ‘Jovi:

    And the *other* version of that song, by one of the BEST singer/songwriters ever (to quote Garth, “GOD BLESS CHRIS LEDOUX!”, indeed!💖)–Jon wrote it, but Chris & Jon made the song what it was, together, and I love his solo version, too (although this duet is what I found today😉);

    Another one from my childhood:

    And some of the Outlaw & Country Rock I later grew up with;

    Dirt Band:

    David Allan Coe:

    The Allmans:

    The Oak Ridge Boys;

    And one of the BEST duets, EVER;
