Grand Funk Railroad’s 1971 show at Shea Stadium sold out faster than the Beatles’ 1965 show did.
The frenzied crowd shook the stadium to the point of causing structural damage (Humble Pie opening up certainly helped get the festivities started!).
Not bad for a three-piece garage band from Flint, Michigan!

Here’s 18+ minutes of Can from 1971.
Kape Kanaveral – List of Crimes
Technically they are from Fenton…at least Mark is 😉
Closer to my home…
I can remember my older brother listening to Grand Funk, don’t know if it was in ’71. But it may well have been because he used to play this too.
Rare Earth – I Just Want To Celebrate
The Clash – London Calling/Train in Vain
Oh MemeWeaver. I believe you can get me through the night.
George Michael – Too Funky:
Director’s Cut:
On my way to see Opeth!
Have fun!
I saw ‘Opeth’ at the title and I went ‘oh oh’. But this was a nice tune!
i think i’ll go with nuclear rabbit..they can be pretty funky
the bassist is a bit of a beast
hell…ill add one thats a bit more uptempo…just coz im still hyperactive :p
Happy VD.
Rock and roll in its purest, most ass kicking form. One of the greatest bands ever.
Grand Funk – T.N.U.C.
…technically it’d be 60’s but I think this performance dates to the 70’s?
…but I’m fairly certain Curtis brought a fair bit of funk in & around the 70’s
…frankly, though…standards may have slipped since then?
Nice, but no intro?
I tend to worry about overposting blues brothers clips…but I absolutely came close to going with the whole picked up from jail intro…right through to the “fix the cigarette lighter”…coda?
I mean, it’s not technically a coda…but it kind of feels incomplete without it to a significant portion of my brain…
That clip made me smile.
“Fix the cigarette lighter” is the punchline–the payoff. You can’t run that scene without finishing there. It would be like playing “A Day In The Life” and then just stopping right before the big piano chord at the end.
for future reference, NEVER inspire splinterrip to go on about the blues brothers…unless…you’re…prepared…to…be…educated.
But, I love the Blues Brothers! Can one not love the Blues Brothers? No!
I see a lot of educating coming my way! For starters, here’s the ordering scene at Aretha’s diner:
Oh I love me some Blues Brothers. I even have the extended version on DVD. Jake and I could have us a regular BB trivia face off.
…so…true story…I was an avowed lurker for a great many years before I got myself a kinja account…& that fateful day the thing that broke my “nobody needs to hear from me” mantra was some troll saying things like “I’m gonna go find a #metoo thread & take cosby’s side” posting under the screenname of Donald Duck Dunn…Mr “if the shit fits – wear it”
…turns out some things I can’t abide?
…always happy to talk blues brothers, though…I was even willing to put up with the kid in the sequel
for the sake of the superband at the end…so my judgement may be clouded
…they had trouble with the funk, though?
https://youtu.be/cqTHrwqQD-w
& I seem to have trouble getting that link to embed…so…life imitates art?
…two whole fried chickens & a coke
…don’t mind me…I’ll just be sitting over here dressed like a hacidic diamond merchant?
You look like you’re from the CIA or something.
4 slices of burnt toast and a rotten egg for me
…it’s rough out at sea, I guess…hope the rum rations hold out at least?
