Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Grand Funk Railroad!

Grand Funk Railroad’s 1971 show at Shea Stadium sold out faster than the Beatles’ 1965 show did.
The frenzied crowd shook the stadium to the point of causing structural damage (Humble Pie opening up certainly helped get the festivities started!).
Not bad for a three-piece garage band from Flint, Michigan!

  1. I can remember my older brother listening to Grand Funk, don’t know if it was in ’71. But it may well have been because he used to play this too.

  2. …technically it’d be 60’s but I think this performance dates to the 70’s?

…but I’m fairly certain Curtis brought a fair bit of funk in & around the 70’s

…frankly, though…standards may have slipped since then?

      • I tend to worry about overposting blues brothers clips…but I absolutely came close to going with the whole picked up from jail intro…right through to the “fix the cigarette lighter”…coda?

I mean, it’s not technically a coda…but it kind of feels incomplete without it to a significant portion of my brain…

          • …so…true story…I was an avowed lurker for a great many years before I got myself a kinja account…& that fateful day the thing that broke my “nobody needs to hear from me” mantra was some troll saying things like “I’m gonna go find a #metoo thread & take cosby’s side” posting under the screenname of Donald Duck Dunn…Mr “if the shit fits – wear it”

            …turns out some things I can’t abide?

…always happy to talk blues brothers, though…I was even willing to put up with the kid in the sequel

for the sake of the superband at the end…so my judgement may be clouded

…they had trouble with the funk, though?
