Anybody that lives in America knows how much gun culture influences our society.  Hard to believe how long we have been dealing with gun violence and done nothing about it.  This song is now almost 30 years old!

and now it seems more and more like almost half this country believe what  Mao Tse Tung Said “Change must come through the barrel of a gun”

But the truth is “gun violence takes the life of an African American man every 5 hours and is the leading cause of death for black men under 35”

Sorry for the serious topic but feel free to take this wherever you want, I’m not completely anti-gun but am completely anti-stupid.

I don’t have an answer so all I can say is Fuck the NRA!

  3. I’m also not completely anti-gun.  My daughter was on a rifle team when she was younger, I supported her decision to join, hauled her back and forth to the range, and attended her competitions. She learned a lot about gun safety and got to be a pretty good shot.  But American gun culture can kiss my ass.

    • I grew up in the country as a kid so guns were around.  Mostly hunting weapons and the odd pistol.  I shot guns as a kid (to my mom’s horror.)  Even hunted once or twice.
      Every so often my (now dying) friend and I went to a local gun range (they are in Canada, but as we don’t have a firearms license, we can’t load the weapons) to shoot pistols, shotguns and rifles of various calibers.  I learned a few things such as the fun of shooting a S&W Model 29 .44 mag and Automag pistol and I get why Dirty Harry used them, but only in the movies as they are really worthless in a real firefight.  Slow rate of fire, too big muzzle flash, heavy kick and too heavy to aim quickly.
      I get the appeal of guns, but any fascination with weapons now is mostly in the appreciation of the mechanics of the weapon and utility (I do watch Forgotten Weapons on Youtube)  Not the urge to own my own personal arsenal.
      However, I don’t own a gun or hold a license.
      Two stories on that…
      1) I also played paintball in my 20s/30s because I wanted to be a reserve infantry officer so I used it as a mental combat exercise.  The first time I played it I shot and “killed” my teammates thus earning the not so flattering nickname “Free Fire Zone.”  It’s not hard to extrapolate doing this with a real weapon as fear and adrenaline course thru your veins especially if your life is on the line.  This is why I laugh when someone talks about shooting the shooter in a mass shooting event.  Target ID isn’t easy.  Only a fool thinks they can assume who the shooter is vs an “alleged” good guy.  From my limited understanding it takes a lot of training for someone to deal with close quarter combat.  Thus Counter Terrorism and Shooter situations should be left to actual professionals not rank amateur NRA wanna be Rambo Bubbas who think they shoot better than anyone from SEAL Team Six or Delta.  Important lesson.
      2.  I was quite paranoid after dealing with Cokehead Narcissist and lived in fear for several months.  I often slept with a baseball bat just in case.  One of the things she did was drive thru my garage door so I had to get it replaced.  A week after it got done, the door company was supposed to send a guy at 5pm to adjust things and add the final touches, but he didn’t show up.  It was 830pm and it was almost dark so I didn’t expect him to show up.  I heard some noises that startled me out of a nap.  At that point the adrenaline kicked in and I grabbed the aluminum bat.  I didn’t bother with the shoes (stealth) and quietly exited the door.  As I was about to launch an attack, I noticed a big pickup truck parked in front and saw the door company logo.  The adrenaline kicked out and I put the bat on the ground.  I went around the corner to greet the guy and inadvertently scared the shit out of him.
      Glad I didn’t own a gun because I might have killed him for doing his job.
       
       
       
       

      • prior enlisted infantry, and a large part of our small-team-tactics training was learning how to minimize the chances of shooting each other.  Like, everything from how to layout a defensive position, to how to set up a hasty ambush, to how to hold your weapons while patrolling, to how to clear a room, etc.  I think it’s fairly safe to say we probably spent less time training on how to shoot the enemy than we did on training how not to shoot each other.
        I can’t help but think of that scene in Ronin where DeNiro “ambushes” the poser…

        Or how many times there is a shootout with cops, and although it’s always vagued-away in the initial reporting, often most of the bystander casualties are due to cops shooting them by mistake – the guy who got his face “eaten” by the naked crazy cannibal, the people shot outside the empire state building a while back, etc.

  13. There has been a huge uptick in shootings here in Atlanta – lots of them on the freeways. I don’t own a gun because I’m afraid of accidentally shooting someone.

  19. In high school creative writing course, we had to bring in music or video prompts for some free writing at the beginning of class. We were assigned themes. I got a theme like high school struggles, and being the good little 17 yr old I was in like 2001, I decided to record this music video on a videotape off VH1 for my prompt. Anyways, I remember Mr. Bagley being very much shook by this video and we were like dude you’re a married guy in your early 30s, how do you not know Pearl Jam or this song?

  20. Today a 4 yr old boy a few counties away accidentally shot himself to death when he found his father’s loaded gun just sitting under a sofa.

    Local news comments were all “gun laws don’t work!!!! get rid of them all!!!” because the father had the gun illegally. 

  21. I don’t really have anything musical to add, but this is one of those topics that I find it difficult to stay out of…
    I’m not even sure how I feel about firearm ownership as a right.  In theory, I don’t have as much of a problem with it, but in practice…  The people shouting the loudest/most about their “freedom” tend to be the best argument against it…
    I’m hardly a firearm expert, but I was prior enlisted infantry, so I’ve spent a lot of time handling an assault rifle and light and medium machine guns, and have fired… I don’t even know, probably hundreds of thousands of rounds (just in training ops, thankfully, I was lucky enough to never set foot in a combat zone)?  I haven’t even so much as touched an M-16 in almost twenty years, but I’m fairly certain I could field-strip and reassemble one with my eyes closed (that’s not impressive, but for some reason it seems to pop up in action movies a lot…).
    I don’t bring up my enlisted stint in meat-world very often, as it’s not terribly relevant to much, and I don’t think I fit the stereotypical image, and I don’t think the stereotypical image fits me, so it’s often just easier to ignore and avoid that whole mess…  But sometimes it comes up, and since most of the people I work with and such tend to not have any experience with firearms, I sometimes get cast as the local firearm expert, and asked questions and for advice (which they often don’t like…).
    So, I sometimes find myself trying to explain the difference twixt handguns and rifles to people, firearm safety and responsibility, why having a firearm won’t actually protect you from assaults/muggings, or why a handful of people with assault rifles aren’t going to be a meaningful threat to a squad of active-duty infantry, let alone any single armored vehicle, combat helicopter, a lone mortar team, a single drone, or any other isolated combat component of the U.S. military, which wouldn’t happen anyways, because all of those components act together and with support, and would wreck your shit.
    All of this should be fairly common sense, but for some reason, it’s not, and I feel like the gun lobby and their propaganda is at least partly responsible for that…
    Fuck, I need to stop, or I’ll be up all night drinking and ranting about firearms and then be late for work tomorrow…

    • My dad was a Marine F4 squadron leader in Vietnam & hated guns but never discouraged me from playing w/ toy guns as kids of that time did.  I once found his gun, a snub nose 38 & he told me that the only time he would have ever shot that gun would be at himself if he was captured.  Pretty fucked up but he was an amazing man that put his country above himself.
