Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Halfway There

My feet are dragging. Give me something to get them moving.

Thanks for coming around.

        • If this pandemic ever ends and we’re in the same place at the same time I could teach you the fox trot. Assuming you don’t mind touch dancing with another guy, and I assume you’re a guy? My apologies if you’re a woman.

          What happened was in the run-up to our junior and senior proms for a week or two gym class became dance lessons. The girls were brought in to be with the boys and we were paired off and taught the fox trot, the waltz, the cha-cha (my favorite; that’s one my husband and I do often, I taught him), the mambo, and others.

          I excitedly told my mother about this. She was skeptical.

          “Do you honestly think you’ll be fox trotting at the prom?”

          “Probably not, but it’s a much more useful skill than learning how to kick a soccer ball.”

          “That’s true. Could you teach me?”

          “Of course. Let me find a record.” We didn’t have much of a pertinent music selection in my house but I found Dean Martin’s rendition of “That’s Amore.”

          “OK. Assume the position. Put your right hand up and clasp my left hand. You do this because for most people the right hand is the dominant hand so this allows the woman to have some control. It’s a little bit like a waltz but less gliding around. Now you do a simple box step but the same beat as the waltz: One two three, One two three. I advance with my left leg and you retreat with your right, and then reverse. Now while we’re box stepping we move to my left/your right…”

          “You’re a really beautiful dancer.”

          “Oh Mom, I have lots of undiscovered talents!” Including catnip for other men, but I didn’t bring this up at the time.

            If this pandemic was over, I’d be on my way!

            I must warn you though that VERY highly-renowned dancers have tried to teach me to dance to no avail. When I say “two left feet,” I mean

            …and after 10 seconds of this:

            It’s a little bit like a waltz but less gliding around. Now you do a simple box step but the same beat as the waltz: One two three, One two three. I advance with my left leg and you retreat with your right, and then reverse. Now while we’re box stepping we move to my left/your right

            you’d be giving up on me…but I would never give up trying.

            • A friend of mine who was pre-med in college (and a beautiful dancer himself) drunkenly told me that everyone has a sense of rhythm if they listen to it and learn. It’s because we have heartbeats, we’re not robots, and the rhythm lies within. I thought that was very perceptive. “I would assume the Cro-magnons danced, people like to dance if they can get over their fears, so maybe some Cro-magnons sang and the others would dance.”

  1. YouTube is down at the moment, and I was just about to post a killer song that everyone here would definitely have starred, probably with more stars than any DUAN post in history.  Let’s all just stipulate that my post was awesome and I won DUAN tonight.  Don’t make me have to bring court cases affirming my awesome post.

  2. Since Luigi already already posted the BEST ‘Jovi for tonight’s theme, I’ll just bring the rest😉
    Not feeling like doing things halfway though, so first it’s Undivided off Bounce;

    Half a week… half a tank of gas…
    Right Side of Wrong, from Bounce;

    Some unrelated Cake, because Going the Distance;

    And the *other* song with Tommy & Gina;

  3. …full disclosure…still haven’t read this thread fully…but I’m going to bet myself nobody used this one

    …of course I’m a day late & possibly a wire or two might have shorted out through lack of sleep?
