That’s right, muchachos. Today we celebrate the anniversary of Kansas being named a state. I grew up in the Kansas City, Kansas, area, and didn’t leave until my third job out of college. I’ve no interest in going back (except to visit family and friends), but I do have some mighty fine memories.
I’m using songs that refer to Kansas’ features or history. Continue that theme, or do the same with your state/region/prefecture/province/shire.

Yeah, I absolutely refuse to use anything from The Wizard of Oz or Oklahoma.
As always, thank you for supporting my attempt to render the cosmos in a butter sculpture Deadsplinter. If you would like to donate to help with the costs of managing this site, please click here.

Shoutout to the Sunflower State
When I was in junior high school I had a math teacher who allowed kids to play music while we took tests. I forget how this worked, but I vividly remember having an unrequited crush on another boy in the class and looking at him while “Dust in the Wind” played.
Good times. I wonder if today’s 12-year-olds will ever have memories like this 40+ years later, since apparently young people never leave the house and all social life is conducted over social media.
I suppose they still must go to school but I have read dozens of articles about the catastrophic pandemic-related school shutdowns and the overnight conversion of parents, mostly mothers of course, into teachers’ aides, who oversaw their children’s education, watched the Zoom lessons, and yanked their children out of the public schools in horror. A couple of my friends did this. I have a relative who barely graduated high school and she married a guy and for religious reasons (!) she’s home-schooling them. I can just imagine the quality of the education that they’re receiving.
Getting old is not always fun, but I am so grateful that I went to (public) school where and when I did.
To paraphrase (steal from) Mark Twain, the report of the death of in person lives for kids is an exaggeration. Rugrats to teens, they’re swarming all over, It’s just that people who write hand wringing think pieces about the issue are the ones who don’t get out enough.
Yup:
I used to work in Hutchinson, Kansas, so Yoder was right down the road.
