I don’t listen to much commercial radio but it is always fun to hear what the locals are listening to when I return to the islands. This trip, along with a bunch of older favorites, one band kept popping up with a very cool Bob Marley cover…
Vitals 808 is a very talented band in the Jawaiian genre and very popular in the current scene.
This song was from the pandemic & the lyrics really touched me with what is currently happening…
Mahalo for your support!
Bobby Ingano is a treasure.
Very nice, I worked w/ Jeff Au Hoy on a project. He played at the Maui Steel Guitar Festival w/ your boy Bobby.
I didn’t know about Jawaiian until now. Just looked it up and it looks like this guy was a pioneer.
I put that song in the tribute video for my father-in-law for his funeral. Henry Kapono is a friend of my sister, she was a waitress at a restaurant he used to play in the early 80’s. He is the better half of one of Hawaii’s most popular duos of all time. Henry still plays at Dukes in Waikiki on a regular basis. My sister saw him a few years ago and he asked her if she remembered the words to one of his songs that he forgot. Of course she did, she is a terrible singer but loves to sing and knows all the words to all his songs as he seemed to know.
That’s great background, thanks. I really like Is That Peace I See.
honest question as i’m tone deaf & musically illiterate…is there something different about their drumming or the beat that is unique or rare?
anyway…here is some tay tay:
Reggae drumming has a bunch of accents on the upbeat, especially w/ high hats like in that song “Shine” above.
idk what any of that means but i was once told that drumming in reggae was different i had just never been able to hear the difference. yay me!
Edit: I still don’t know the difference…it just sounds different. Still…yay me!
