Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Long Songs

It keeps going & going & going & going...

It’s Friday night and the music never stops on Deadsplinter. Let’s make this playlist last all through the night!

There’s a lot of 3 minute songs out there, but occasionally artists put out a track that is double that running time or more. And quite often those songs are epic. Share your favorites!

Thanks for listening to the music play, Deadsplinter.

  1. The standard by which all other long songs are judged:  In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly.  It took up the entire 2nd side of the album.  The rumor about the singer being so loaded that he slurred the words “In the garden of Eden” is mostly true with this correction:  it happened during the original writing of the tune, not during the recording session, but they decided to keep the title the way it was anyway.

When I was in radio, this was the song I would put on when I needed to go pinch a loaf and nobody was in the studio.

    • decades ago, I have vague memories of being a summer camp counselor, and getting clearance from the higher ups to play this track as the last song for the dances, specifically because it was sorta longer than average.  (also, teen me and people teen me associated with were very pro Led Zeppelin…)

  2. This Bill Evans cut is 14 minutes and change, and it’s not boring for one second.

Vanilla Fudge turned every pop cover into an 8 minute epic.  Content warning:  organist Mark Stein has some very hairy-ass shoulders.

Like Vanilla Fudge, the group Rare Earth made a living doing 10-minute epic versions of hit songs.

    • I don’t know why the Vanilla Fudge link above didn’t embed, but it’s worth it for watching Tim Bogert play terrific bass while tripping balls.  Here’s an even better example of completely stoned bass playing.

    • I don’t listen to Tull as much as I used to, but thanks for posting this, I feel like the album version is pretty much the go-to for too-damned-long-song-tracks…
