Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Low Expectations, High Rewards

For about 15 straight years an annual tradition for myself and a group of old friends was to attend a 3 day music festival. We would all make a list of must see shows and fill in the time between with new bands that sounded interesting. Most times we would agree, sometimes we would go our separate ways for different acts. One of the best and most unique acts we found one year was a wild band from Israel named Balkan Beat Box that blew us away with rhythms and horns like we had never heard before.

  1. Expecting – Minnie Riperton

Minnie really shows off her vocal range on this one.

  2. Red Eyed Legends – Expectations vs. Reality

  3. Paul McCartney at the 2004 Glastonbury Festival (look at all of the people !!!).

Still such a beautiful song, even after all of these years.

  4. Dang it. I waited for this all day and lost track of time, my day is almost over and time to punch out. I have to admit never going to a festival before, unless you count the Monsters of Rock….I don’t. It was the Silverdome and sucked big time.

    Anywho….

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome. Crosby, Stills and Nash (no Young here)

We are stardust, we are golden
We are billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

  5. …not gonna lie was a bit of me that was disappointed there wasn’t more beatbox…so I would have posted something else but I can’t find a clip with audio that does that stuff justice…guess it must be true what they say – you gotta watch them foreign beggars

    • Some of their stuff is a little more beat box-y but a little more organic. This is a good example…

  6. …so here’s the thing – I can only find somewhat shoddy audio & I’ve put the roxorloops ones in reverse order because “part 2” cuts out just when you (or at least I) don’t want it to…but I figured to scratch that beatbox itch a little?

live I’ve heard the guy take requests for different instruments & just riff on them & for the record the horn part of the clip undersells it considerably…

& I don’t know if it really is “the” best but again, live the calibre of this guy is considerably above what the audio track is willing to bear witness to

  7. Very nice job hosting tonight, Loveshaq! Thank you!

I don’t recall if we’ve ever discussed him before, but I would love to know if you ever had the opportunity to see the Gentle Giant, Bruddah Iz perform. Such a kind and gentle soul. Gone too soon.

    • Thanks Luv! I used to work w/ IZ’s mother & sister-in-law in Hawaii & saw him live several times. I’ll have to do a whole DUAN on those crazy stories but for those who didn’t see my DUAN about the Hawaiian music scene in the day, they would jam for days in Waimanalo. This is one of their videos, Henry is the only one still alive of this group. This is basically every party, luau, or get together back in the day, it turned into a jam session of whomever was there.

      • Great stuff, Shaq! Would love to hear some Iz stories again sometime.

  8. This was a tough one! I like to post songs I know rather than tracking down ones that fit the theme. This is the closest I could come. It’s by a local band from their first CD.

  9. So much for “mellow.” Have some badass metal sung in Samoan:

    • Only thing scarier than a mad Samoan is a mad Tongan. Friendliest people in the world until u piss them off! Don’t do it!!!!

  10. A friend of mine travels huge distances for concerts, and inspired me to go to Ireland two years ago for BBC’s Biggest Weekend. I got to see Underworld live finally, and Orbital again, and crossed an item off my bucket list: seeing Orbital play “Belfast” in Belfast. This is the video of the show, and if you look carefully, you can see me right at the front in an orange hoodie 🙂

    • Awesome!
Saw Orbital in Detroit in May ’19, what a set! So many great memories brought back by hearing their tracks.

  11. Band KOKOKO, they make their own instruments for junk and pails and stuff. They refuse new instruments, saying that they alter the sound.

  12. I finally bit the bullet last year and went to Wacken. It’s the holy land for metalheads, and had been dream of mine for at least half my life. I saw damn near every band I wanted to, along with 80K other metalheads. I was front row for a few bands, including Demons and Wizards, who absolutely killed it.

    • One of these days I’d like to do 70,000 Tons of Metal.

      • …seems like maybe metal got heavier while I wasn’t paying attention?

around about “peace sells” or “ride the lightning” I think I kind of checked out a bit – probably couldn’t hack the pace…

still have some residual fondness for a bit of “& justice for all” though…

        I’ll try to keep up?

  13. I used to live walking distance from Golden Gate Park and used to go to Outside Lands almost every year for as long as I lived there. I’m somewhere in the crowd for this one.

    Death Cab for Cutie

    • Oh shit, do I still love that song.

  14. I saw Balkan Beat Box a couple years ago and they were one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

(For all you music people, it was at a festival I go to every year called Festival International de Louisiane – it’s an international music festival in the heart of Cajun Country and it’s my favorite weekend of the year)

  15. Holy hell, that Balkan Beat Box is infectious. Gonna check out some more.

Also, let’s show some love for the Moshcam series on YouTube. They do such a nice job with live shows. Highly recommend subscribing to them.

    Gary Numan – Haunted (live)

  16. I saw Gary Numan at the same festival a few years later, great show. Much more cool stuff than just “ Cars”.

    • I’ve added the playlist of that Sidney show to my library. It’s really amazing.
