DeadSplinter Up! All Night: Mizunderstood

I included this tweet in today’s DOT and was thinking about other songs that are misunderstood or misappropriated. Whatcha got for me Deadsplinters?

As always, thanks for your continued support of DUAN and Deadsplinter!

  1. Years ago, I read the autobiography of the guy who was President of the US division of Apple Records back in the 60’s.  He relayed this story of an interaction he had with John:

“Hold you in his arms you can feel his disease.  What does that mean?”

“Nothing.  I just made it up.”

John went on to explain that he and Paul got tired of straining their brains trying to write the perfect lyrics, particularly when people almost never got the meaning of their songs correct anyway.  So, they just started writing was sounded good to them.

  2. The most obvious one – wedding staple = creepy song about stalker behavior. Weird

The Police – Every Breath You Take

  3. Only the chorus is a Republican Chant.

    The rest… not so much.

    • Bruce Springsteen mumbles so much I never knew WTF he was singing in this song so I used to sing “dead devil in the freezer”.

  4. welp…you took 2 of the 3 options i know….and i really dont want to go with born in the usa

i mean…theres going for the low hanging fruit and then theres going for the fruit you stepped on

so ill just misunderstand the assignment

    • see….now that song never made a lick of sense to me

  5. This song has so much controversy as to what he is singing about.  I’ve heard it is about a post-apocalyptic world or drug addiction or schizophrenia but then I heard that Danny Elfman said at the ending of the song he says “”Please leave my heart” which was meant for his ex-wife and that lyric is not in the actual printed lyrics of the song.  Whatever the truth is, pretty cool and deep song…

  6. Used in various commercials.  Songs about heroin addiction shouldn’t be used to peddle cruises or other bullshit.

    • Didn’t Rush Limbaugh use that as intro music?  I know Jim Rome did, but he’s a crackhead not a junkie.

  7. Same with this one:

    The Stranglers – Golden Brown

    Hugh Cornwell explains the song.

  8. It’s really a paean to heroin, but there are couples out there who use it for “their song”.

  9. Huge numbers of couples at weddings use this at their first dance —

IT’S ABOUT TELLING A GUY SEE YOU LATER YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT!

  10. This one is not an appropriate wedding “First Dance” song!!!

It’s about a break up, and “The One Who Got Away”!!!🙄🙄🥴

    This one would be an appropriate “First Dance” song;

    https://youtu.be/VI2-ASiNCac

^^^That^^^ one is about a couple sticking together, “come hell or high water,” and being there for each other, whether the commitment is made legal in the eyes of the law/church or not.

The couple in the second song is living the promise they make to each other, whether it’s “official” or not.

If you know someone picking a ‘Jovi song for their “First Dance” song, slap them if they tell you they’re picking Always, and tell them to pick any other ‘Jovi than the breakup song!
