  4. This is not quite the same but let’s revisit the birth of grunge. I was in my kitchen, alone, making dinner and awaiting the return of Better Half, and this came on my ancient radio tuned to a pop rock station:

I remember thinking, “This is really something new. I am hearing the birth of something new.”

Little did I know. Young men started showing up in the office wearing plaid shirts, as if they were agricultural or mechanical workers in some rural area, and not entry-level employees in Midtown Manhattan. Women started showing up in knee-length thrift store dresses, nose rings, and combat boots.

The company never had a dress code per se but if you were at a certain level the men were expected to wear suits and the women wore suits or pantsuits. Everyone else took the easy way out and went all J. Crew. Because of my position I drifted between the two looks, depending on what and who I was going to be confronting.

Occasionally I had kind of an advisory/teaching role. In the seminars people would talk about their ferrets and sometimes the men would be wearing these kind of Zoot suits with fedoras. People would chat about how excited they were about their far-flung Brooklyn neighborhoods, which I had always known as no-go zones.

I was a stegosaurus. I was 30. But I loved them all. I chatted them all up. They would open up to me and file (informal) complaints to me that I would duly pass along, confidentially, and they would unload about their childhoods and college experiences and pass along music and book recs.

    It’s been quite a life.
