Darrow Fletcher was a child prodigy from Chicago who scored his only hit in 1965 when he was just 14. He had a sweet, soulful voice and seemed destined for stardom. But, it never happened. He kept singing and recording well into his 20’s, but despite cutting some really cool singles, never caught on. I really like this funky number he recorded in 1971 for the tiny Genna label who seemed to have only ever released three 45’s in their existence. They put a of production into this song for what must have a shoestring operation. Darrow never made an album, but some of his singles were finally compiled in the past decade and it’s a pretty extraordinary body of work for someone who went almost completely unnoticed.
Thank you for your continued support of Deadsplinter!
Diviner, Hayden Thorpe solo album, was with the Wild Beasts.
That’s lovely. I mentioned the other night wanting to listen to pretty music. I’ve got so much noise in my head as it is. You keep delivering. I really liked the Elegy you posted a few days ago.
Thank you, it balances Keitel’s punk rock vibe (which is also good stuff).
It definitely is, and normally more my style. But nothing is normal these days!
Nice song Jonee, cool vibe. Two-fer Tuesday, Joe Cuba Sextett – Gimme Some Love
It’s also Time for the Truth
Good tune, music is a weird biz, sometimes talent isn’t enough.
Here’s another guy with only 1 bona fide hit. My friend had this LP when it came out and I can’t remember any of the other tracks.
Andy Pratt – Avenging Annie
He’s released around 30 other albums but as far as I know never had another hit.
That’s a great song. He is another one with a long career that went under most people’s radar. It covered a lot of ground.
Kids In America – Summer Of Love (feat. The Griswolds):
When Corey Taylor was in The Wiggles:
Oh God, I used to get this fucking song stuck in my head when my daughters watched this show. Damn you to hell!!!!
You’ve got to laugh a little,cry a little.
Until the clouds roll by a little.
That’s a great one. The Five Keys were a terrific group, but I always think of this offensive one of theirs.
That’s a great tune–thanks for tuning us on to him.
Robert Finley – Real Love Is Like Hard Time
That is the coolest looking dude!
Believe it or not, he was on America’s Got Talent a few years back and I thought he was a guy out of nowhere. Last year, I was in a used record store in Brattleboro, VT and found this CD which had been released before he’d gone on the show. He’s had a few releases–all great stuff.
Did someone say “real love”?
Hot Nuns – I Love You Still, I Always Will
This is cool, has a Bloc Party kinda vibe with a little more edge.
As long as the world goes round.
A couple of 80s tunes and one classic from Louie
…and so do webhosts!
