Thought I’d change it up tonight – what podcasts are y’all listening to these days?
Recently, I listened to Rachel Maddow’s Ultra – it’s not about MK Ultra but the rise of the Nazi party in the US in the 1930’s. Eerily reminiscent of what’s happening with Republicans today.
Here’s her website with links to different podcast platforms and I found it on youtube. https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-presents-ultra
I’m also really liking American Scandal, narrated by the unfortunately named Lindsay Graham – not the one from South Carolina. He does a deep dive with multi episode arcs on different scandals like Enron, Watergate, Theranos and many others. His voice is soothing and the episodes are really interesting. He also has a history podcast called American Story Tellers that is about different historical points in the US.

And, I was off of true crime for a while but I’ve started back slowly with the Already Gone podcast by Nina Innsted. She focuses mainly on missing people in the Great Lakes area, but she also has a soothing voice and doesn’t add any drama to her stories. https://www.alreadygonepodcast.com

What are some other good podcasts to check out? Thanks for your support!
You know I love my podcasts. American Scandal is good. I like Unexplained by Richard MacLean Smith for supernatural stuff. He has a great voice. I’m cautious about true crime preferring investigative types over the more sensational ones. I’ll give Already Gone a try. For fiction I highly recommend Alice Isn’t Dead, by the creators of Welcome to Night Vale (which of course it’s great) and the Magnus Archives. But my favorite is one I’ve mentioned before Old Gods of Appalachia. It’s inclusive, the witches are the good guys, and features strong women characters. The ending credits song is by Those Poor Bastards.
I love Old Gods of Appalachia – I think you turned me on to it.
Most of my podcast library is the various Marketplace shows, but I am also a big fan of Lindsey Graham’s podcasts like American History Tellers.
The late Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast was great. He was a surprisingly insightful interviewer compared to his persona.

Technically it’s not a podcast but whatever. I think I linked to it before and the Studs Terkel radio interview archive is amazing.

Former Deadspin now Defector writer Kelsey McKinney’s Normal Gossip is a hoot.

…it used to be that to get at the whole catalogue of on demand BBC radio (that could arguably be considered podcasts) from outside the UK you kind of had to find the ones that had made it to third party listings…or jump through various VPN-type hoops & maybe a sign-in…but as of relatively recently they made their (honestly not as good as the one it replaced) app available & there are some things on there that are pretty good?
…the app is “BBC sounds”…& off the top of my head “the infinite monkey cage” is pretty good…”you’re dead to me” is a history one in the same paired-with-comedians sort of format as the monkey cage thing…but a lot of their science/nature stuff can be…”all in the mind”, “the life scientific”, there’s a whole string of them
…”mark steele’s in town” might seem too niche if you aren’t from the UK but part of the point of the exercise is demonstrating that the people in the next town over “wouldn’t really get it” & although he’s a bit strident (to the point of maybe being somewhere between an acquired taste & an elaborate parody of the “you had to be there” variety)…once you get past the 80s-ben-elton-so-right-on-it-probably-counts-as-aggresive delivery…he’s pretty funny & not a little smart
…there’s one hosted by a guy who’s also not a little smart (but – if I’m honest – also not a little grating when the chip on his shoulder comes to the fore) called russell kane called “evil genius” that’s actually kind of a neat format where they try to run through some notable pros & cons of a renowned figure & then vote on whether overall they’re a genius or evil…there’s a bunch of those ranging from genghis khan to biggie smalls
…at this point I should probably mention I’m not on comission or otherwise professionally shilling for the beeb…not even by proxy…but the truth is I could list more things to search for in the back catalogue of radio 4 alone than all the non-BBC-podcasts I’ve ever listened to…& some of the investigative stuff & the correspondent coverage is honestly up there with the best of the podcasts I’ve found elsewhere on the same topics…the one about disaster trolls…or the “war on truth” one…or “death by conspiracy”…they’re all presented by the same lady who covers all things disinformation…& there’s other ones by other people about boris & putin & a lot of other politicians with a lot of form they wish we’d forget
…”the coming storm” was a Qanon-WTF? one…there was a pretty decent one on the history of “hacking” that might have been just called “hackers”…but might have been “the hackers”…not sure…”the lazarus heist”…”the northern bank job”…”the reith lectures”…there are more but I’ll shut up now…after I mention “natalie haynes stands up for the classics”
…full disclosure…not sure if they’re all listed as “podcasts” in the app…could be “series” or “documentaries” in some cases…but they were all on there last I looked?
They all sound interesting – especially the Evil Genius one.
I have this weakness for paranormal/conspiracy podcasts, but not if they’re from right-wing jackoffs. I currently enjoy The Farm, Penny Royal (which is about my part of the country mostly) and Conspirinormal. They help me sleep.
I do not like podcasts where the personality of the podcaster is front and center, because they are never, ever as interesting or funny or cool as they think they are. I like when the subject matter takes center stage. I also will only listen to podcasts that are approximately 90 minutes long or longer. I fall asleep with them playing in my earbuds and they give me great nightmares about aliens and weird parts of the Appalachians or underground bases or strange cults or Freemasons or Rosicrucians. I eat up that shit. Oh, also Aaron Guylas’ The Saucer Life is also a very nice podcast about early days of the flying saucer saga. Also Belief Hole is pretty nicely done but occasionally get a little too self-conscious for me. And Brothers of the Serpent. That’s a real good one, but some of their episodes are clunkers but the ones that are good are real good.
i dont listen to podcasts….so here!
I’ve not yet joined the podcast crowd; but these suggestions are all quite enticing.
