Tonight the theme is sad songs. I’m sure we all have some favorite somber melancholy tunes.
Don’t cry though, sad songs can be beautiful and they can be cathartic .
Thanks for supporting DUAN and for giving each other a shoulder to cry on.

Kevin Gilbert – The Tears of Audrey. Listen to this under a good set of headphones. It’ll blow you away.
To be a wistful teen again.
This DUAN brings back all the teenage/YA angst. Way better than real life adult angst!
Eternity -Robbie Williams
Iris -Goo Goo Dolls
Last Kiss -Pearl Jam
@HammerZeitGeist I almost added Iris and Last Kiss into the post!
LOL….unexpected side effect..
im staying at me mums at mo…she heard the song and decided it was lovely..and now ill have to hand over me flogging molly cds when she drops me off at home sunday..lol
I really like this song but it was released during an awful time in my life:
That was the Seeb remix, which is jumping. For seriously sad you have to go to the original:
There are a couple of artists who always get me in the feels.
Bonnie “Prince” Billy – You Will Miss Me When I Burn
Rufus Wainwright – Poses
I think this is a poignant song:
George Jones does sad songs better than most
The best.
Also, the Irish have some incredibly sad songs. I tear up whenever I hear Carrickfergus. I love this Allison Moorer version, which has the amazing bonus of the great Jerry Douglas on dobro.
I always thought this song was about a friend of theirs dying of AIDS, but TIL – it is apparently about Amy Ray’s cat.
I mostly listen to music to NOT be sad. This is the saddest song I can think of right now…
This songs come in second but more for the time in my life and the messages it sent to me when I needed it.
Let’s just say this one has been wrecking me lately.
Patty Loveless How Can I help You Say Goodbye
“You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt. It’s not for any reason with the lyrics, so I’m not going to post it here because also I think it’s a crummy song written by a whiny man.
However
My grandma saw him perform it on Ellen or something like that when it was a new song and she couldn’t stop talking about it for days and days. She fricking loved it.
A few weeks later, one of my cousins got her the CD, and my grandma had no recollection of the song, seeing him on Ellen, talking to us about it, and didn’t even care for it when my cousin played the CD for her. Objectively I knew she was getting older, but this way predated when we realized she was dealing with onset of dementia. So when I hear this song now, I think about her and her dementia and how at the time we didn’t know to recognize the early onset and missed so much time we could have spent with her before she was gone.
It’s one of those misunderstood songs:
Oh damn! I didn’t realize he was a stalker who kills himself. I thought it was just a whiny man.
I remember years and years ago hearing Sting talk about how uncomfortable he felt when people would say that “Every Breath You Take” was their wedding song. Like… huh… good luck with that one since that song is also horribly stalker-ey and very much not a romantic song.
I’m surprised this one was missed.
It’s my favorite Phil Collins tune
What’s sad without Hank Williams?
Two Smokey And the Miracles anthems. The tunes are bright, but the words aren’t.
